Very good point. Anaheim is one of the few teams with the cred to get out of the West and they have lots of assets and are bulking up on defence.

This is the time to spend those assets.

But Eric Brewer? Are we thinking of the same guy?

He's not pronger, but he can play minutes.

Allen and a 3rd round pick for Bourque and Brewer is pretty decent.

Apparently in the game today all Anaheim's defencemen are 24 or younger. Vatanen looks good but still young, made a lot of mistakes in the first game against the flames (had 3 points but was -1). I don't know if they have an elite top pairing like Chicago or St. Louis. Maybe in a couple years.

Much like Pronger however, he once played for the Oilers. Ergo he is No Good.

I think the Ducks overpaid a bit, but I think they are making themselves a lot more tougher to play against. They are going to like a bigger threat than what they were last year.

I’m not surprised at the price. Many teams have been looking for defencemen in this market and coming up empty. It often takes a bit of an overpayment to set a market and start things moving.

Ouch tough luck for the Ducks

Kevin Weekes @KevinWeekes
I'm told AnaheimDucks newly acquired D-Man Brewer may have suffered a broken foot.@NHL @NHLNetwork.

only after 2 games

ouch, that sucks. Now what for them? hopefully this means they start to slow down a bit so the Flames can catch up to them.

It is pretty amazing that Tampa got a high 3rd from them for Brewer.

That's a bit unfortunate for Anaheim. Likely saves them having to make deals later on with a couple guys like Beauchemin and Brewer rejoining them in 6 weeks.

I find it funny how a 3rd round pick is now so bloody valuable. Anaheim is clearly a win now team, and if they have any aspirations of lasting more than 6 games in the playoffs chances are they'll be dipping 7-8-9 defenseman deep into their roster. Who here remembers Brennan Evans? Brewer can still play 18 minutes a night as a good 3rd pairing guy, and move up the roster if need be. That holds a hell of a lot more value to a contender than the right to draft the next Bogdan Yakumov come June. If I was Bob Murray, I happily pay that to get him now with Tampa retaining salary.

So to get a jump on other teams waiting for cap flexibility and get an available guy
