That's my idea of a nice vacation. If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost?
Me as well. That trip is an absolute Blast. If you like fishing and relaxin then I can't even describe how good that trip is.

Cost varies on what time of year you go. In peak season it is $950 I believe and non peak season (when we went) is about $800. Basically that only gets you a flight in and out of the lake with the cabin and boats. You have to buy beer, food etc... so it ends up costing a bit more. Bring LOTS of beer, we ran out the second last day. No liquor stores up there to make a run to.

www.northernsportfishing.com is the website. Check it out for more details.
(I hope I am allowed to post a link) [/b][/quote]
Thanks, Mike. Shared between 2-3 people, that's a real bargain. I've been looking for something similar in Saskatchewan this summer but they were all a few thousand bucks and catered primarily to wealthy Americans. A little out of my range. The prices you mention are quite reaonable.

Actually the price is between $800 and $950 per person. The rest of the groceries beer etc....you can split.

Not cheap but still worth it.

How much did that thing weigh? Nice catch.
Well to be honest it was a bit chaotic getting it in the boat. None of us are exactly "pro" fisherman so we were just about as scared as the fish was. Unfortunately I never measured it or weighed it.

I have sent the picture to a few taxidermists though to see what a replica would cost and they have all said it is between 48" and 50" and 28-35lbs.

What was your method for fishing for Lake Trout? It's my experience that Mackinaw (lake trout) feed on the bottom and the best luck I've had is with a big chunk of whitefish on a white jig. Let it go to the bottom and then just raise it up and down a few inches every couple of seconds.

I've never been pike fishing but I know they get huge up there. Looks like a blast, something I'd love to do with my Dad and my son!
A lot of people jig for Lake Trout and we have in the past. For some reason we never tried it this trip.

We used these devices called Dipsy Divers. Basically they are like a poor mans Down rigger. It is just a planer board that you hook to you line that take your lure really deep, really fast. Then you tie your lure 18" or so behind the diver and start trolling. We were catching them in usually about 50-80 feet of water and they were biting on all types of spoons or spinners.

Unfortunately I only caught one, so I am not one to give advice. But Goinalltheway, and my Brother caught quite a few of them like that.

That would be a great trip for your son and Dad to go on. 10 different lakes to choose from. The 2 I have been to were spectacular.

That is a pike and a half!

I've only ever caught one bigger, but not by much. Nice catch.

Who here calls that a jack fish (nickname for Northern Pike)?
Like Clarkey, I'm kinda partial to slough shark.

Nice fish. Good on ya for throwing it back.

It'd have been a cool trophy, for sure.
Lord know's you'd have to be a master chef to make it taste good.

I think I am going to get a taxidermist to make a replica from the picture. I have no idea if I will ever catch a fish like that again so I might as well get something to remember it by.

I guess replica's last longer and look better than originals as well.

If I am not going to eat it I would rather the thing live for a few more years so I can catch him or her again next year... Plus a fish like that will pass it's big fish genes on to other fish to hopefully fill the lake with lots of monsters like him.
If he managed to live 20 years I am not going to be the one to kill him.
