I'm surprised Toronto is at a +1 goal differential even after getting blown out by Buffalo 6-2 and Nashville 9-2.

Thanks for adding those records. I am quite surprised to see Anaheim, Colorado and Dallas with such poor records in divisional playoff.

Vancouver has been extremely strong against divisional teams.

Because they've played the Oilers 4 times.

That's what EVERYONE is saying, but no - no big events in SJ. That's just the way the cards were dealt. The good news is that there are a lot of home games and days off in the future.

Kind of wish nhl.com had the option to show points as a percentage of games like was done earlier in this thread.

That would be nice.

Unfortunately, I think the NHL's webgoblins are still stuck in the newspaper era. They seem to think that they only have about four column-inches of newsprint to fit all the standings data into, and if the data won't fit, they won't bother to print them. Never mind that ‘printing’ in this case is done on pixels that can be reused indefinitely. Or that most people’s screens are far bigger than the newspaper space that used to be allotted to the standings.

Oh, wait, they didn’t do that. *grumble*

Shall I just knock off, and ask a mod to delete the thread?

Or in the Leafs case, the last 12 games!

Figured, wotthehell, I might as well finish what I started.

Updated OP. 7 more teams tonight. Chicago got a rare gift – their 20th game was that blowout against the Oilers. Oilers also got a rare gift – that blowout was their 21st game and does not show up in this sample. E=NG^2.

Another update. 5 teams still to go. Florida still has only played 18 games, so I’ll be bumping this for a few days yet.

All 30 teams are in now. The Flames' record for their first quarter of the season was 9th in the league.

Since the second quarter is traditionally when ‘October surprise’ teams fall back into the pack (or out the bottom), take this as a snapshot of where we were, and see how badly we fall off the pace. I hope I’ll remember to look these numbers up when we reach the halfway mark.

My guess would be around 12th. But I am more concerned with where they will be with respect to the playoff picture. As it stands after 20, the division and conference look like this:

VAN 13-6-1 27
ANA 11-4-5 27
CAL 12-6-2 26
LAK 11-5-4 26

5. CAL 26
6. LAK 26
7. CHI 25
8. MIN 24
9. WIN 23

I am going to predict that they are still in a playoff spot at the 40 game mark.

Thanks for this - I find it useful to look at which teams have won more in the shootout or gained points from OTL - try to see where the "luck" factor has played into things.
The road record is useful too, though what would be an awesome stat to see is if someone could work out the strength of teams played by each team. Has a team benefited from playing the Oilers/Sabres of the league a lot, or are they winning games against playoff calibre teams? That would be a great way to predict if a team's record is sustainable, or if future improvement is more likely

For strength of schedule, I find the Sagarin ratings pretty good:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nhl/sagarin/

Unfortunately, these are recalculated every day, so it may not be possible to go back and find each team’s ratings as of the day it played its 20th game.

Notable from today’s ratings is that Vancouver ranks 27th in strength of schedule. (Calgary is 7th.) No doubt this is because the Canucks have played four games against Edmonton, which is widely rumoured to be no good.

The frightening thing about Edmonton, by the way, is that they are ranked 28th by Sagarin and their schedule is ranked 21st. That’s right, the Oilers have sucked their way into a tie for last place (NHL standings, not Sagarin ratings) despite having an easier than average schedule. (Buffalo ranks 8th.)
