You do remember that the Flames lost both their franchise forward and goaltender prior to last season in addition to other vets and were projected to finish dead last by many experts? Yet they finished closer to 8th place than to 30th. Sure, you can blame that on the Sabres, but they still finished closer to 22nd than to 28th and were in 49 one goal games for a reason. Hartley made them buy in and created a hard-working, never-give-up mentality and that is so much more important than "only" finishing in 27th place in year 1 of the rebuild. The organization will reap the rewards for Hartleys groundwork in a couple years. He deserves to stay on.
History is repeating itself - Burke went from "the new GM will pick the coach" to "Hartley is going nowhere" pretty quickly. Seems like the process has been the same for Treliving.

Any pass Bob Hartley has gotten is one he's earned, especially from this fan base.
You really need to put his hiring into context when you say something like that. The guy came in with a lot of heat, was called washed up, one of "Feaster's guys" etc etc. Hartley has gotten anything but a free pass from this group, he's earned every last bit of kudos he's received.

Hartley demands a lot from his players and does not suffer fools gladly. Yet he seems to have a good relationship with his players, has their respect and can still laugh with them too.
What has impressed me most is his ability to bring along most of the youth core (Backlund, Brodie, Colborne, Monohan, Gaudreau, Granlund and Jooris).
Would be good to see him get a renewal.
Plus when talking to the press he gives the best analogies in the NHL!

Given where all the experts thought the Flames would finish last year and this, wins and standings don't mean as much as factors like: Does he have a good relationship with the players, can he motivate them, is he teaching young players to be better, does the team look like it's playing hard and consistently for him, is he able to get the team to adjust to the opponents' game, etc. The impression I get is that by those criteria he's doing pretty well.

I do think Hartley has been solid with the Flames and would like him to return next year if the Flames keep their play like this.
Wasn't Treliving quoted as saying he would discuss an extension during the year though?

I was totally wrong about Hartley.
I thought he had gotten the gig due to nepotism with Feaster, that he was past his prime as a screaming task master in an NHL that required more teaching coaches to insulate young players that were becoming increasingly important in a cap environment.
I thought Hartley was a remnant of a bygone era of the NHL and the first 2/3rds of his tenure in Calgary clouded my vision. His Iginla led Flames team was one of the worst in my memory. Maybe the worst.
I was totally wrong. I don't think it's his edge as a tactician, I think it's his edge as a teacher and motivator that is the difference maker for Calgary.

Anyone who doesn't think Hartley deserves an extension can go cheer for Eakins and the Oilers.
And...

Im not saying another coach could of made the Flames finish higher, just saying its a possibility.
I think Hartley has got an easy pass as the Flames coach so far.

Yes, due to his great coaching.

The way I see it, for those saying that Hartley led us to bottom of the barrel in the standings, this rebuild could have gone 2 ways. It could have gone the way of the Sabres and Oilers. Extremely painful, fan interest at a low, and teams expecting to wipe the floor with you. Or, it goes the way it is now. Entertaining. Full effort. A team that regardless of our 27th place last year the entire city and media were proud of us. Now we're starting to see glimmers of light. Hartley is 100% responsible for the culture change of this team, AINEC. I thought he would be a 2 year stop gap at the most. Now I think he's the best coach we've had since D. Sutter. If he gets us near the playoffs, he will be a Jack Adam's candidate.

He deserves an contract extension obviously. 2 or 3 years, it doesn't really matter, you can always fire him before the contract ends, it will only hurt the owners pocketbook.

Misleading stat, makes it sound like the 4 teams were close.
We were 10 points above the greasers, 11 points above Florida and 25 points above Buffalo. We were much better than people expected us to be last year and are light years ahead of where anyone expected us to be this year.

Name five available coaches that would be appreciable improvements over Bob Hartley.
