These days the only thing they should even consider spending extra money on is scouting and development.

The only thing I would do at the deadline is trade for Iginla. He would be a good RW to have on a cup run.

I think at this stage, team chemistry is everything, and to develop what we have should be the top priority. There will come a time when we should spend money to make a push for the cup, but now is not the time.

I guess you're always looking to better the line-up. But with the current depth in the organization I wouldn't bring any outsiders in.
Unless it's Sydney Crosby.
We're going to be trying to dump old guys in a year or two to open up spots. No need to bring more in.
Let the young guys figure out how to win together. That would be huge.

Yeah, he would probably have great chemistry with Brad Richards.

With Smid's luck the last few games he could be up soon.

If the salary cap doesn't go up this summer the Flames could be in a good position to take advantage of teams who have made mistakes.
You can't draft and develop players with rings on their fingers. Target players who have a history of winning, and lots of playoff experience.

I agree.
There is so much parity right now that the standing can change fairly quickly. Four points separate 1st from 8th in the conference and we are right in the middle of that. It's a real fine line between being a playoff team and not. The last thing we need to do at this point is assume the rebuild is over.
Besides, I don't think we should mess with the chemistry.

He's been playing a few games and to me has looked good. He was scratched last night though. Don't know what's up with that?

If things are going well in February, why modify the team?
Stick to the plan and stay the course, no matter what the Point totals say. Even if we make the playoffs, don't do a damn thing that goes counter to that plan.
The road to being a legitimate contender is littered with booby traps that derail the process. Don't fall for it! Cinderella teams don't win cups, properly built ones do.

I think it would be a mistake to start trading away the future for the now at this point. The team seems to have a very good culture at the moment, the environment is very positive, and there is not 'push' to have this team turn into a contender this year or next. I say just enjoy whatever successes this team is having and know that it should only get better as the youth on this team grow in the organization.
I still don't think the rebuild is 'over', and in my opinion, the last part of the rebuild is when you make trades to shore up weaknesses or depth in certain areas in order to start contending. Opinions are mixed at best if this team is a playoff team or not, but I don't think anyone is looking at this team as it stands as a contender or just a piece or two from being a contender.
The Flames may still 'come back down to earth' yet. I don't know about the rest of you, but when Giordano crashed into the boards, I was holding my breath and instantly worried about plummeting down the standings again like last year. I picked this season to be their bottoming-out year during the rebuild, and they have surprised me indeed. Let's just see what happens by the mid-point of the season at least before we even start discussing making trades with an eye for the playoffs (which even then, I will probably still be of the mindset that it would be a mistake personally, but who knows).

I vote stay the course. The only trades we should make are ones where we completely fleece the other team or grab a current need below fair market or for pieces we don't actually need (ie: Whipping boys).
If we make the playoffs, cool. I'm sure we can get reasonable priced guys to join us. No need to overpay anyone.

If anything now is the time to sell. It's no secret defensemen are a hot commodity right now, and the Flames have a few rearguards playing above their skin. If someone wants to overpay, I wouldn't say no.

See: Andy Ference and Chuck Kobasew or Brad Stuart.... we were never the same after that

Obviously not Brodie or Gio, so you're talking about Russell and/or Wideman. This would leave a gaping hole in our top 4 and we are thin on D prospects. So don't agree.

In all likelihood this run ends at some point, and if you can get a first for Wideman possibly by eating a little bit of salary, the move everyone here has dreamed about for a year or so, then you do it. Bring up a kid and see what they have. It's good asset management.

I don't move Russell or Wideman. Move Wideman in the offseason, don't trade him when our team is doing well with him and Russell as our 2nd pairing. We don't have to make moves right now.

I'm not saying you shop him. If Treliving gets a phone call from someone desperate you just don't hang up.

I would be inclined to keep our low cap payroll free in the chance that a game breaking scorer ever comes on the market, or if we ever have a chance (offer sheet Nathan MacKinnon in 2 years? yeah I know its a long shot)
