LOL, ever mistake a tip jar for a "take a penny" jar? That gets you some nasty looks. Thing is, if they hadn't been so snotty, they probably would have gotten more as I hate change and would likely leave more than I took just to not have it jingle all day.
While we're on the subject, what do you tip cab drivers? Is it relative, or is there a floor? I take a lot of $7-10 cabs and I kind of feel cheap leaving 70 cents if I stick to my 10% rule. I try and leave $2 for cabbies at a minimum if the cab doesn't stink, and spare change if it smells like armpit. 70 cents gives him 2 phone calls and it doesn't seem too meaningful.
Chalk me up with the no tip for pickup of food.
Two factors influence my tipping the most: 1) Am I on expense account and 2) How hot and chatty was the waitress
