I assume they're trying to bolster support for their 2022 Olympic bid, although, at the rate the other bidders have dropped out, they might win by default anyway.

Thats why you send the Oilers and Sabres. Fewer points? They'd jump at the opportunity.

No I don't think that any reasonable 'hockey' people would want their team to have to go. But I would imagine that all 30 greedy owners are fighting each other for the chance to sell a few thousand jerseys and other merchandise over the period of a few days.

Never forget, it is the greedy owners who run this league and not the reasonable hockey people.

The NHL would probably ask teams in the Pacific timezone to open their season in China. The Ducks and Canucks did this in Tokyo, Japan to open the 1998-99 season.

And Calgary played the Sharks in pre-season that year in Japan as well if I remember correct, right?

EDIT: I was off by a year and it was regular season, completely forgot those games counted. Looking at this wikipedia article I actually had no idea how many touring games teams had done in the 70s and 80s to Europe. Pretty awesome actually. Also seems like Calgary is the only team not to lose a Super Series game.

According to that list, we lost to CSKA Moscow in the 90-91 Super Series...

Becoming even a slightly popular brand in China would be a license to print money. If I was a Flames owner I would be very interested in this. From a business perspective the upside is worth jet lag.

They'd turn off 1.7 billion people to hockey in a span of three hours. At least we'd find out what 'Edmonton is no good' translates to in Mandarin.

For all the people wearing the knock off jerseys, this is the game you wouldn't look ridiculous if you wore them.

it's a great idea, that's a huge market.

The NBA made inroads in China based on one guy. Now in China basketball is the biggest sport and they show live NBA games more than Europe show live NHL games.

I believe if it's just about hockey, then KHL might be a better idea logistically, but if there's something specific about the NHL interesting for China I'm not seeing, I'm all ears.

i think that the marketing opportunity would be too big to pass up for the nhl.

i never thought that the nfl would be as popular as it has turned out to be in london, and they are talking franchises now. Whether it ever comes off or not is another story...
