Yup the path that starts with Jokinen and ends with giving up a 2nd to dump Kotalik is pretty horrid too.

That wasn't Sutter, that was Feaster.

Stralman would have made an amazing addition over the summer.
Brodie-Giordano
Russell-Stralman
Wideman-Smid
Engelland

Without knowing your choices, I'd be up for a debate taking the Stralman one as my pick

Stralman looked really good in camp that year iirc, another head-scratcher by Sutter.

If Sutter had never re-signed Gio - that would have taken 1st place in the bad deals.
I'm suer I'm not alone in saying we won the Phaneuf deal just by subtraction.

Most of it was Sutter. He created the problem (Kotalik) that Feaster resolved by adding a 2nd to dump him. But 2 of the 3 moves in that string were Darryl.

It's not whether we made off better than Toronto, it's that we made off much worse than we could have in selling Phaneuf for what has essentially been a few years of a decent 3rd line center.

There's that all right. It was such a sudden trade - who else was in the market?

Rumors have it that 28 GMs were surprised that Phaneuf was available.

While we we didn't get enough for him, we at least buried the Leafs.

The Phaneuf trade was pretty terrible. Surely a hyped-up player at that stage of his career could have fetched some decent prospects & picks, plus a serviceable veteran or two. I don't mind that he traded Dion as much as what he traded him for.
The Jokinen/Prust for Kotalik/Higgins trade was pretty terrible. Don't really know what that achieved, especially in tandem with the Phaneuf deal. What was his philosophy there? Completely overhaul your lineup & fill it with 2nd liners from bad teams?
Stralman for a 3rd round pick was bad, but a couple years earlier he traded Toni Lydman for a 3rd as well. Pretty terrible. Lydman was a quiet lynchpin in our defence at the time.
Getting rental Brad Stuart & Wayne Primeau for Andrew Ference (in his prime) and Chuck Kobasew wasn't a great deal. At least the conditional 4th round pick we got (because Stuart didn't re-sign) turned into T.J. Brodie. Total fluke though, as Sutter tried fairly extensively to re-sign Stuart.
Sutter also managed to trade away something like 9 or 10 2nd round picks during his tenure. Yes, that got us Kiprussoff (who in turn got us to the SC Finals) but it also meant we missed out on talent like Saad, Carle, Vlasic, etc...
His dealings seemed to get increasingly desperate as his tenure as GM went on. He had an ability for acquiring big name talent which I really liked, but in doing so he dismantled the 2004 cup-run team almost overnight. That, coupled with piss-poor drafting meant he left the team in a terrible way once Feaster took over. Stralman for a 3rd was just a drop in the bucket...

I'm just picturing Stralman and Saad as Flames.

It was a salary dump, pure and simple.

He sad thing would be that saad would probably be in the Baertschi situation (not really giving him a good shot and playing in the minors) but that might not happen, it could easily happen because of the setoguchi's having to play apparently. I'm just putting out a scenario though

Purely speculation, and we'll never know the answer, but I wonder how much pressure Sutter was getting from above during that time. He made all the right moves in 2004.

You really think Seto is holding back Sven?
Also it is a HUGE assumption to think that the Flames would have picked Saad with that pick - though that 2nd round in general is shaping up to be pretty strong, including for the Flames. Lots of solid prospects and already NHLers.

Seto played on the same line as Sven, so hard to see how he was played instead.
