Yup, that's pretty solid money for a starting goaltender.
Just a shame that Fleury is a backup in disguise.

Not surprised. This is the same GM who handed Cam Ward a massive contract after 1 good playoff run. I can't imagine Pens fans are happy with this.

Allan Walsh deserves every penny he gets from MA.

Didn't expect that kind of term or dollars. Thought he'd be in line for 4 million MAX, over 3 years at the most.
Guy is not a top 10 goaltender in this league.

It isn't like the Pens don't already know what they have in Fleury. Another 10 or 20 or 50 games won't change what he is.
Problem is, there's no way a guy who has managed only three post-seasons with a save percentage above .900 out of eight is one I would sign a four-year deal for that kind of money.

Good thing he's only being paid as a top 13 then.

He's an average starting goalie getting paid average starting rate for a 4 year deal. I think having him locked down for only 4 years is a win for Pittsburgh, who are they going to upgrade with in the next couple years?
Seems like a reasonable deal by Pittsburgh.
He's not a goalie that wins you the cup, but when you have Crosby and Malkin on your team you really just need an average goalie to have a shot, and he's an average goalie.

Take a look at the goalie market this summer for UFA's.
This was the right thing for the Penguins to do.

Tough situation for the Penguins with The UFA crop...maybe they explored trade options but had nothing of value.
For quick fun, goalies who faced 1,500 or more even-strength shots over the past two years plus some Flames-related tenders - and we all know what happens to MAF's performance come playoff time. Adjusted save percentage is War-On-Ice's metric that accounts for shot location.

They could have had Hiller for a lot less if you look at what the market is paying for starting goaltenders. Fleury IMO is a 2nd tier starter in this league that's been fortunate to play behind a good team. This is the type of contract that gets people fired.

Ramo is not as good as Fleury and lacks NHL experience.
Niemi is the only starting goalie available next summer now, he may still re-sign in San Jose or the Penguins could of missed out on him if he made it to UFA. He's also not a clear upgrade on Fleury either.

And letting a starting goalie walk with this summers crop of UFA goalies gets people fired much more quickly.

Seems like a lot of money for a guy with play-off issues in the past, especially with the big money they already have to pay for Crosby and Malkin.
But as others have stated what other options are/were there?
Ramo is a big step down, Niemi has questions of his own, Hiller was coming off vertigo and questions about his consistency as well.

It seems like a fine deal to me. There are 14 goalies in the league with a higher cap hit, and he's better than many of them. The term is the best part for them, as, they aren't locking him to a longer term deal. He's not to blame for the Pens last playoff run, maybe the previous two years, but considering their options I like this deal for them.

I'm not sure Ramo from the last half of the season onward is a "big step down". Save % was almost the same on a way weaker team.
Sure Fleury's been good the start of this year, but Ramo ain't been too shabby and IMO has some upward ceiling room.
