What could possibly compel anyone to think it's a good idea to go into a dumpy apartment and get tattooed in the kitchen? Or maybe in the tub? I don't know.

I assume it's a lot cheaper than a reputable shop, and sure, some people don't have a lot of dough, but this is just crazy to me. Literally crazy. You have craziness if you go in there to get that portrait of your dog.
When I'm getting something permanently etched into my flesh, I'm going with the lowest bidder.

Frankly if this is where you get your tattoos why not just wait until the warrant gets issued and have the thing done at Calgary Remand for a couple of smokes and a hand job?

Ha ha.

I also have to wonder how the real "Pharaohs" would feel about this place co-opting their fancy title.

I have a very close friend who is a tattoo artist (not Calgary). His plan is to move here and work out of a room in his house (assuming he can in Calgary).

He would have all of the sterilizing equipment and follow all the best practices, just without the overhead of a full shop or paying to work in someone else's shop.

There was a place in Lethbridge last summer that was shut down for the same thing. In that case (and based on the ad linked above, in this case too), the guy used disposable needles, so there is nothing used that requires sterilization, which is why they didn't have proper sterilization equipment. They just didn't keep the proper records to show the AHS inspectors, which is why the warning was issued.

Here's the story on that one: http://globalnews.ca/news/770156/the...-shop-is-safe/

I suspect this situation will likely turn out the same. As long as he was using the disposable needles correctly, there's likely no chance anyone was infected by a dirty needle, but because it failed the inspection, they have to issue the warning.

$100/hr is way too much to pay this person.

Judging by the building where the "office" was located there were probably not just dirty tattoo needles kicking around. Why anybody would subject their body to a tattoo in a place like is mind bottling.

I kind of agree with nixon on this one.

I've got a few tattoos, and they are pretty simple that just about any passable artist could do, but even with that being the case, if that was the portfolio I saw when I went into a shop, I would have politely walked back out.

Calgary is extremely lucky to have some amazing artists working here... Doug Fink, James/Anthony Tex, Sam Smith, Dave Fried, Andrew Wheeler, Jay Breen... PAUL ####ING JEFFRIES... to name just a few!.

Anyone that feels comfortable in putting a portfolio of that quality up, in this city, is a complete hack and it is no surprise that they are operating with sub par health standards. That artist couldn't walk in to any reputable shop in this city and get a spot tattooing there. Sadly it is not the worst tattoo work I have seen come from the city not even by a long shot.

That portfolio would be considered #### even for 1980's era tattooing.

Blame also lies with the clients that try to get around having to wait for months/years to get in to a good tattooer and then get cheap tattoos.

I lived in the "twin" building next to that for a short time. Ya, it gets a bit sketchy on Centre St between the 7-11 and the Tim Hortons.

Ah, so that's the motivation? They don't want to wait. That at least makes sense, although it's still stupid to take a risk on something like a tattoo.

Do you really have to wait months or even years to get a good one? It's not like it's an MRI!

Our local shop is booked solid for about 6 months, the lead artist for the next year. He actually doesn't even book past that, so every six months or so when he opens the books for appointments it fills up fast.
