Do a major renovation yourself? Unless you have experience how did it turn out well? I've seen work done by professionals who have experience who leave a lot to be desired I can't imagine how it would look if someone had zero experience in tiling, drywall, painting, installing the bath/shower/toilet. Not to mention the electrical and the hundred other surprises that always show up during a renovation.

So please don't do it yourself unless you want it to turn out pretty ugly and are fine with that. Also, when you go to re-sell you might not be able to tell the difference or care but the potential buyer definitely will.

After 10 years of home ownership you should be able to pick up a few trades. Start by tiling a front entrance. It's pretty tough to screw that up. Get a friend over that knows how to do something. Watch a bunch of youtube videos.

And the most useful, help a friend out with his renovation. It's always a good idea to practice on someone else's house first. That's how I learned to install hardwood floors. Helped with three floors before I tried my own.

Some people are loaded. This is CP after all. The rest of us probably want to pick a few things up over the years so that we don't have to pay through the nose for a simple renovation. Gutting an ensuite is pretty easy as far as major renovations go. I gutted my kitchen this summer, and that was a lot more work. I wouldn't recommend that to a beginner.

Oh, and with how often my wife decides we should move, pretty much all of my renovations are done so we can sell the place. Haven't had an issue with it yet.

I am all for doing home renos & have done much of the work in the other bathrooms & basement myself. Drywall, painting, baseboards, install light & plumbing fixtures. It is something I enjoy doing, but the ensuite project is more than I can take on due to the numerous trades & time it would take.

Need a wall moved, ceiling scraped, tile throughout, pluming & electrical moved, tile & glass shower etc etc. Now if I didn't work full time & wanted to be without the bathroom for a couple of months, I could probably put it together. That is why I just want to hire someone to do it all, and yes, I know it wont come cheap!

Recommendations for what would be a good choice in tile colours / styles for an en-suite if transitioning from a darker hardwood?

Surfer. I am not exactly sure what style we are looking for, per se.

The house was built in '97 & has tile throught with jetted tub & vinyl 3'x3' shower stall, double vanity. We are looking to bring it up to date with a 4'x4' tile/ glass shower, granite, new vanity, & new tile throughout. Also some new pot fixtures rather than the halogen beauties that are there now. Leave the jet tub as is & replace the surrounding tile with ceramic & glass accent..

Any updated experiences (contractors, etc)?
(Planning to do next yr, but will likely need to do research and line someone up before then; up front, I don't pretend to play the part of the handyman)
