I think we all knew majority of the cohesion of this team would start to happen around game 10 though 15. I'm actually impressed Widemans rounding into form earlier than I anticipated. If he can stay healthy he could have a good year in terms of production. His pace last year put him in the 40p range too IIRC before those hand injuries derailed his whole season. A healthy Wideman should be able to reach that point potential this year. Making him worth every penny he gets paid. Defensively not so much but from a scoring perspective, worth it.

I really hate how goals make people forget how terrible a player is at the other end of the ice. He has not looked good in our own zone the entire season. Wideman will look good in the offensive zone and I guess as long as he outscores his mistakes?

He's not a player we're gonna want here when Bennett, Monahan and Gaudreau are in their primes but I think he can contribute positively right now if he's used properly.

As long as he scores AND they win, all is forgiven

I don't think people forget - but Wideman's value is largely at the offensive end - and on the PP.
When he's not doing that he has exactly ZERO value.

Wideman producing offensively and sucking it hard in the D zone>Wideman NOT producing offensively and still sucking it hard in the D zone

That's all.

I think at times Wideman has been decent defensively and these times are what some remember and try to hold him to that standard. Pigeon holing him to just being an offensive weapon does him some disservice.

When the Flames signed Wideman we all know that they picked him up because of his offensive skills and not his defensive skills. He had success partnering with Kris Russell at the beginning of last season but his play went down after his injuries and partnering with Butler, or Smid, or Derek Smith. Even at the beginning of this season he was playing with Smid, or Engelland or Diaz with less success. The last few games Hartley put him back with Russell and he started producing offensively and had some jump in his game. It's great that the Flames are getting good minutes with their #1, 2, 3 & #4. I hope Hartley stays with the same defensive combo during this season.

If Wideman keeps producing we might all be pleasantly surprised by the return he could fetch at the deadline. League-wide he is much more respected than we at CP give him credit for. A playoff team looking for a PP QB might look solely at his goal-scoring record.

That being said, until we pick up a huge, 25-year-old, mobile, crease-clearing defenceman with a booming slapshot and excellent 2-way play to replace him on the 2nd pairing then I'm pretty happy to have Wideman around.

He's looked better since being paired with Russel again.

Bumping this thread to just say Wideman had yet another good game.

Hartley should scratch more players .
