I thought I remember hearing (a few years back) that they like each other but are both really competitive.
In this video, Dion gets into the Penalty Box and looks over at Iggy and shrugs his shoulders, looking like he's saying he doesn't get why the refs didn't let them go. With the way neither of them looked angry and the lack of chirping after the linesmen didn't let them go... I'd say guess it wasn't about bad blood as much as it was just a heat of the moment thing between two very competitive guys.

You're probably right.
However, I prefer to believe that they never got along and we're now much better off having neither...
Can't remember where unheard it, I think it was TSN, but something about a league directive about breaking up fights before they start when it is possible ie. if the Linesmen get there when they are squaring up no punches - break it up... Punches thrown let them go...
I've heard from a person in the know that it was Regher and Phanuef that fought and it was on a road trip, not in the locked room. For what that is worth
can you expand on the story at all. where, why, who won etc?

This isn't the first time they've faced each other as opponents. If there was animosity from Dion's Flames days that rose to the level of them wanting to scrap, you'd think it would have come out long ago.
Not big on fighting in hockey, but I said a couple years ago. I was really disappointed when the leafs dropped that 4 goal lead to the bruins, because they would have played the pens and I wanted to Jarome punch Dion in the face.
Once I see that happen they can take fighting out of the game.
Iggy and Vinny had an epic fight, and then a couple months later they were buddies on the same team. As much as we like to think its an old score to settle or something I think its just 2 intense guys playing hockey
still wish we got to see it...would have been the most epic battle since shawn michaels vs marty jannetty

Aside from the tabloids spectulation, I think the more verified stories was this:
Dion vs Iginla - Dion wanted to be captain... thought the dressing room was too much like a old boys club, 9-5 kind of workers. I don't think there was much verified beyond that, just some frustration on Dion's part.
Dion vs Regehr/Warraner - I think there was reference here that Dion "did not want to learn" from those 2 guys.....
Any of the black eye and TMZ stuff, I guess you can look that up if you want.

As much as I want to see Iggy beat the crap out of Phaneuf, the game where the Leafs dropped the 4 goal lead in game 7 was not disappointing in any ways for me.
Nothing really wrong with the hit attempt. Iginla tends to get hot headed over hits, clean or otherwise (a lot of players do). I don't see it as anything personal any more than when Iginla has been in fights with other players about the same thing.
And yeah, Iginla would have beat him down. Phaneuf isn't a wimp by any means, but Iginla is a monster.

eh, just watched the video, what exactly is Iggy responding to? A clean hit attempt?
lol, this is a problem: Fights after clean hits/attempts
wait, what? You think it is is misguided for players to stand up for themselves when the other team is being aggressive (albeit within the rules)?

I still find it odd the animosity CP still has towards Phaneuf. I remember that summer we acquired Bouwmeester and couldn't wait to see him on the Flames' blueline with Regehr and Phaneuf. If it weren't for that brutal ten game losing streak that season which prompted Sutter to trade Phaneuf, I still think the Flames would've been a playoff team in the 2-3 seasons that followed.

Depending on what was said... I could see their little confrontation after the hit stirring a few words between the two. Phaneuf looks to be trying to get Iggys attention after Iggy comes over to give him a few words as Iggy zig-zags to get away from him.
It could have also been 'good hit' and Iggy didn't care to chat further after that.
Fights that happen organically out of frustration are the best! Ugh, I'm still lamenting over the refs breaking this one up. That was such a stupid decision. Fights are supposed happen organically as a way for players to release their frustrations, not these staged fights we now see with two goons who can't skate (though still rather entertaining).
I hope they can fight the next Avs vs Leafs game, but even in the slim chance that they do, it just won't be the same.
