I often stay at the Best Western on Macleod when in for a game, a nice short walk to the games and centrally located to shopping, restaurants, downtown area etc.
http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwest...ertyCode=61049 Although you may get the room cheaper at hotels.com, bookit.com or the like. Nothing fancy but has a small pool, hot tub and includes breakfast saving you paying for one meal.
I agree that if you are going to drive all that way that you have to take in Banff, one of Canada's nicest destinations. It isn't too far and if you look around you can get a hotel there at a pretty reasonable rate, enjoy the incredible sights ofthe Rockie Mountains, some nightlife, restaurants and maybe since you are from the South throw on some skis or snowboard and give a winter support a try!
Except for the fact that it's one of the most popular tourist destinations for people overseas.
You are talking about Calgary? as in Calgary Alberta? Where the only thing to see is the freaking tower? Or the old ruins by the Stampede? Or the Stampede in July?
Familly trip, we're going to Callaway Park.

Could be worse, I live in the hole called Regina and although I love my province I do not like the city at all. Nothing to see here..... move along......only thing worse would be winnipeg which I call Regina's bigger brother!
Oh, maybe Edmonton, cause the city and teams are no good!

This is a pretty negative outlook. Calgary has plenty of things to do especially if you're only here for a couple of days. You can add the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, Calgary Zoo, COP as things to do within the city.
Obviously people use Calgary as starting point to hit Banff, Canmore or Kananskis as well.

Sure am.
Calgary is not only a popular tourist city in and of itself, but it's the gateway to the mountains and Banff for most tourists. I find most locals (by city or by country) don't always grasp the appeal of where they live (or places familiar to them) to foreigners.
PIM will have a good time! Lots to see and do within two hours. April is pretty hit or miss weather snow-wise, but the weather is usually warm enough to keep the roads clear even it it does snow.

I never really understood the hate for Calgary from people in Calgary.
We used to spend lots of summer vacations in Calgary before I ever moved here, which is a large part of the reason I did. Fairly major airport, plenty of amenities and an easy launch point to the Rockies (especially being the closest airport to Banff and areas of BC). When I used to work retail it was amazing to see the amount of tourism Calgary generated.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be pissy. And yes, CC I see what your saying. But I like to consider myself a rather effecient traveller and I'd like to see PIM get the most out of it.
RM14 are you familiar with Desi112?
I'd say spend a day or two in Calgary, catch your games. I gaurantee that in 2-days, if well planned, you can catch most of what Calgary has to offer. I'd quickly move onto Banff/Kananaskis 2-3 days and then move onto Jasper or if you have it in you Vancouver.
We can hate on Van all we want, but it has oodles more to offer then Calgary.

Those tourists are generally winter sports fanatics. People who like to ski, skate, ..
Could always try airbnb for accommodation. I recently traveled to Winnipeg and needed a place for a week and found a nice room for 40/night. I've heard stories of people going to other cities and finding top-notch condos downtown for terrific prices. The premise is that private home owners rent out their apartment/unit/room. Might be worth a look?

I would do Vancouver & The Island in a completely separate trip though. And you could say California is better than Vancouver, Hawaii is better than California and so on... But this thread is about advice to when he gets to Calgary.
Right, lets say it is, which will he be hiking or biking in April?
He's spending 4 days here to watch 2 games. Seriously man, sometimes people just go to places because they have a specific destination in mind. Why is it such a big deal?

Can't lie, I skipped the 4-day detail.
In that case you'll have plenty to do.
B I stand by my opinion that this is one of the boringest "busy" cities ever.

Somewhat irrelavent to what I was responding to, which was your original statement that Calgary isn't a tourist destination. In which myself and several others have claimed that it is to many people.
Anyway I'm not derailing the thread further. Since PIMKing is a Flames fan, Calgary as a destination seems like a pretty logical choice.

Exactly.
Vancouver is great, but for Vancouver you're adding two travel days alone.
There's a lot to enjoy locally around Calgary. No sense going all the way to Vancouver for just a couple extra days, what a waste.
I guess if terminator is a travel efficiency guy it might be "as much as you can as fast as you can." I've always preferred picking a destination, enjoying it for all it has to offer, and really getting to know the area and the people.
