7000 is large by junior standards. I can only think of a few larger rinks in the WHL - Calgary, Edmonton, Portland, Vancouver, Spokane, Saskatoon and probably Everett.

Edit: correcting Seattle to Spokane.

People said that when the Hitmen bid on the 2004 Memorial Cup and didn't get it because people said "what if the Flames are still playing then?" Everyone laughed, until 2004 rolled around and the Flames were still playing during the Memorial Cup.

Pretty sure a couple playoff games makes the Flames more money than hosting the entire Jr tournament. The W needs to keep all it's markets strong, good on them for going into the smaller rinks. Besides, they don't need a specific number of seats to win, they need a specific revenue target. Saskatoon mistakenly gauranteed revenue, prices were adjusted to hit it and they missed. Other teams have 'bought' the cup this way too.

You also have to have a team that has a chance of being competitive, or at least the makings of one. Although that criteria seems to have been less important than it used to be.

Ron Toigo is the majority owner of the Giants.

Calgary could develop a plan where the corral is used as back up arena in the unlikely event there is schedule conflict. I have always wanted to see that building packed once. 7000 seats in an old school setting would be awesome.

As cool as it would be to see hockey in the corral again (or for a lot of us, for the first time!) I can't image the building is quite up to standards, even for junior hockey. It might have the seats, but what about amenities, and just the wear overall?
