He did well in the preseason... especially in games where he was the only NHL caliber d-man on the roster.. Maybe he was chosen for those games due to his leadership abilities?

Perhaps OT, but would like to see the NHL add a third alternate 'c'.

I'm pretty sure each team is allowed 4 Captains, including 1 captain. Meaning they can have 1 C and 3 A's or 4 A's on a game line up.
But they don't HAVE to use all the letters.

I dunno, I still think Backlund has more to offer in terms of leadership than Russell, but I'm not in that dressing room, so it's mere speculation. He just seems to really love being a Calgary Flame.
Maybe they want him to focus on being a top 2 center more than being an alternate captain (not that it should distract him too much).

That's what the rule ought to be, as it is in many other leagues, but the NHL remains old school. Either 1 C and 2 As or 3 As.

I'm surprised that Russell got a letter over Backlund as well. He must be good leader behind the scenes. Hopefully Backlund gets an A when/if Glencross is not back next season.

Is it me or does Glencross look like he put on weight?

Russell is a surprise to me as well. I don't see him as mainstay of the team, but I guess the Flames see it differently.
One of the duties of the A or C is to communicate with the refs, so it's good to have an A on the ice. Since Russell isn't often on the ice at the same time as Giordano, this will work.

That was the first thing I thought of as well.
Also, I think that they were either testing him for the job, or he earned it during the preseason. It almost seemed like the away group of prospects was his to lead, meanwhile Gio got the home group. He did it by always being one of the top players on the ice, so great for him.
As for Backlund in my eyes he earned the A during last season. I just think it was harder for him to assert his leadership during the preseason meanwhile being injured. I think he will get his permanent A after the trade deadline.

I liked backlund with the A last season but Im not in the room. I'm sure they had a good reason for Russell and I hope he does well in his new role.

I wonder if Backlunds history of injuries worked against him getting an A. Hard to lead when you have to do it from the infirmary.

Huh, guess they're planning to keep Russell then. I am actually surprised by that. I thought with size being an issue on the team, he'd be one of those guys that just needs to make room to get us bigger somewhere.
Also, this was on the Flames site. Says he was surprised himself and considers himself more of a quiet leader.
Could be they were looking for different types of personalities as captains.

Hartley gives a lot of credit to Russell, about 3:20 onward.
Sounds like a "leader by example" choice.

They named Hall and Eberle as the only A's this year, so they actually managed to get it right this year.
