Versteeg is still on their cap for $2.2 million (Florida has $2 million). When you look at their roster he's the obvious guy they'd like to get rid of to clear cap room, but I doubt people are lining up for him... hence the Leddy rumours.

This signing, good or bad, is pretty irrelevant with respect to cap space. Per CapGeek, it's for $550k, which makes him the lowest paid guy on the team and not an increase in salary at all over whoever else would have taken that roster spot.

If they signed ten carbombs they would be cap compliant. Not sure what the issue is really

They're over the cap right now, no? At least according to capgeek, they're over by almost 2 million.

How does signing a player at 500k not reduce your cap hit? It's a zero sum game. Show me another player that reduces their hit more..

It's a 23 man roster. If Carcillo and his $500k salary is in, then someone else, and their greater-than-$500k salary has to be out.

Ah! That makes more sense. I was thinking to myself:
"They add them all up, they dont take like a weighted average or anything..."

some lucky/smart non-first round drafting for the likes of Keith, Saad, Bickell,Hjammer, Smith, Kruger, Crawford...only Toews, Kane, and Seabrook were 1st round 'Hawk picks.
And Sharp for Matt Ellison was an absolute steal from Philly.

Like it, next year Kane and Toews' cap hits will get even bigger and they'll be in even more trouble.
If cap stays like it is, they'll have 4 mill in space with Kruger/Saad/Runblad all RFAs. Oduya/Rozsival/Richards as UFAs. They'll be going through this next year too.

Chief...it will be adios to those 3 UFAs and Rundblad, I would think...Retirement for Rozival, and Richards would be high mileage...If any of the Kid D-Men (Clendening, Dahlbeck, Johns) show anything, Oduya might be a trade deadline effort to get SOME return.

You then have 11 forwards (after re-signing Kruger/Saad, which likely uses up all of your 4 mill) and 3 dman...I'm sure they'll get creative but imo this will have happen next year too...

^Yup. The Hawks depth has been eroded this summer. It will be eroded some more next summer.
