I would claim both of Elliott and Samuelsson. They aren't spectacular, but it would help to address our depth in terms of young D-men. If they suck you can just waive them. They are more or less of the same class of talent as Sieloff and Wotherspoon.
I'd say Elliott is better. Even in his short time in the NHL his underlying numbers were not too shabby.
Have you seen the Avs moves today? Roy is a bad GM.
Patrick Roy is not the GM, it is Joe Sakic. Besides whoever they send to AHL probably deserves it even if they are veterans or not. That team have a lot of young talent.

Not on the back end. Their D core beyond the top pair is butt garbage.
Butler, I doubt St. Louis was the only team calling. He is a serviceable bottom pairing defender but you're only willing to play in the city with the best depth in the league? Surely Colorado or Philly, just throwing names out there, would have offered something.

I actually think this was a pretty savvy decision by Butler.
· Best case scenario, he makes the team and gets to play in St Louis, his home town.
· Alternate scenario, he is waived, picked up by another interested team (quite likely one who was also negotiating with him in the summer), and he is guaranteed to spend the whole season in the NHL.
· Worst case scenario, he plays in the AHL, and is a likely in-season call up for the Blues.

Elliot Freedman did a spot on the FAN 960 last week, and basically said as much. While Sakic currently holds the office of General Manager, Roy has special oversight built into his position with the team, and is effectively the team architect.

Nope. Roy is the Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations.
Joe Sakic is Executive Vice President/General Manager/Alternate Governor
Greg Sherman and Craig Billington are the Assistant General Manager.
Maybe you are right, their defense is hurting a bit but they just signed Brad Stuart to an extension. That's what happens when a team tries to load up with good young forwards, they start neglecting other positions. In this case, the D.

Plus, if he does clear waivers and is sent to the AHL, the Blues farm team is in Chicago. If he gets sent down, at least it's not to some tiny backwater town where the closest airport is a two-hour drive away.

Same here, and it really should be a no brainer for us. He's as good offensively as Diaz, but has potential to round out his game still. As sureloss said, he's not been as good recently, but he is young enough to possibly recover.
For a team going through a rebuild and having such poor depth of defensive prospects, it would be a little bizarre not to claim him. I can see not taking Markstrom due to our current goalie depth, but we don't really have any depth in our defense corp.
Samuelsson is more of a physical D-man, not spectacular, but might be serviceable. If you're going to sign Brookbank possibly, why not get someone that's more or less the same talent wise, but has some potential still?
If they are not very good, then you can just waive them again and they either go to Addy or elsewhere. Doesn't hurt to try.

I thought the rules were that you can't waive a waiver pickup?
What about Louis LeBlanc - has he fallen that far or was he never that good?
