I don't get what you mean. He didn't place himself on waivers.

Interesting take:

The possible thinking? Vancouver’s looking to get the 6-foot-6, 196-pound Swede through the process and into the minors before another team suffers a goalie injury.

With Lack playing lights out in the preseason, he was clearly the odd man out.

I would claim him even though he's been terrible. Even if it means carrying 3 goalies. If he's bad then waive him down the road. If he develops, then great, if not well then there's nothing lost.

A roster spot for developing talent is lost

If claiming him affects our positioning for future waiver claims, I'd pass.
Markstrom doesn't seem to fill an organizational need at the moment.

Well, he would be carried on the pro team and if he is bad enough to get waived again, then send him to the ECHL instead.

Nope, it's based off last year's standings and remains so until some point around December, which makes it then based off this year's. Claim 1 or 100 players and your spot is the same.

You can't send a player on a non-ELC contract to the ECHL unless they consent.

I doubt it.

A better approach would have been to wait until closer to the season when teams are sending other goalies through waivers so that team looking to pick up a goalie have more to pick from.

I think we would have the 4th priority of waiver claim. I could see Florida claiming him before us though.

There is a reason Mike Gillis is no longer working in the NHL as a General Manager.

Couldn't anyone claim him on re-entry waivers still?
Or is the plan to keep him on the farm for the year?

Re-entry waivers were eliminated as of the 2013 CBA. Teams can call up players freely.

Urbom was waived by NJ last year around this time, WSH picked him up, then waived him and NJ claimed him back.

Might be the same type of situation.

you can. Zach Boychuk was claimed and waived by three different teams in the lockout-shortened season I think
