Funny thing- during the press conference, Tom Watson and Mickelson both traded chirpy remarks about how many points the American rookies contributed to the team. Watson, as if blasting the vets for not contributing like the rookies, said the 3 rookies contributed to 8.5 of our total points. Mickelson responded with "I am no mathematician, but they only contributed 3.5 points. If they had contributed 8.5, we would have won".
Anyway, I did the quick math and they are both wrong. The 3 rookies of Speith, Walker, and Reed contributed to 5.5 of the American points. Reed and Speith played together as a team, so you can't those team points twice (which is where Watson made the mistake), and I think Mickelson didn't count Walker as a rookie because he is 35.
Here is the golf channel report card on the American team. Pretty pathetic contributions from some of the vets.
