My dentist recommended that I removed all 4 at once. His reasoning was that would not want to come back after having only two removed.

If you're a smoker, don't smoke for a week otherwise it increases your chance of getting a dry socket, which is extremely painful. Also don't drink through straws for the same reason.

I had four done at once but they were already through so I guess it was an easy pull? I really felt okay the next day, but two days after was when I really felt worse, that's what I remember, it was about 10 years ago. Also ask the dentist to keep them for you so you can see how big and ugly the roots are. I bright mine home, and the wife thought them out shortly after.

When I got mine done (I was only 15 years old at the time) I had all 4 wisdom teeth out, plus a 5th tooth that grew into the roof of my mouth in one sitting. Basically, it was the worst experience of my life. I was completely out of it for like 4 days. I would hope that most people have an easier time than I did, because I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Reiterating what has been said but:
If you're a smoker, quit for a week
Don't drink through straws
Do the warm saltwater swish but don't swish too hard! If you loosen the clot, you can get dry socket which hurts a lot
Clove Oil is great if you do get dry socket
Do the saltwater swish as often as possible
I didn't need pain meds other than advil which is supposed to shrink your nerve endings and works best; everyone is different though

Ice ice ice. That helped me a lot. I had to get put out for mine as the teeth on the bottom had impacted with my jaw bone...I had to go to a facial surgeon. Like codynw, I had a fifth tooth on the upper right side as well, so they dug that one out too. Awesome.
Anyways, if your recovery is anything like mine, you'll be on a liquid diet for a week or so. Prepare my making soups & smoothies so you're not stuck doing it when you're all drugged up. I made a few different hearty soups & blended them up so they were easy to swallow & put them in jars. It was really nice not to have to cook anything.
As everyone is saying: don't use straws or smoke. I didn't get a dry socket but I know people who have and apparently it's terrible. Rinse with salt water and get plenty of rest. Good luck!

Another vote for being put under to have it done. I'm not sure if it has changed since I had mine done, but mine were removed at a hospital. My dentist said he preferred that on the off chance something goes wrong, help is much closer.

I had my 4 wisdom teeth out when I was in high school. To this day it was by far the most painful experience I have ever been through. I've heard that taking 2 out isn't bad. But 4 is real bad. I went under and they had to break my jaw in 2 places. I woke up face down on the gurney in an empty room with tubes all hooked up in my mouth. I was so high I had no idea where I was and I started freaking out until the nurses came in to calm me down. My dad picked me up and I was so messed up in the elevator that I couldn't make it to the car without him holding me up.
When the anaesthetic wore off, that's when the real pain began. Of course solid foods were impossible to eat. But puréed food was no better. My wisdom teeth were all underneath my gums, so they had to rip my gums apart to get them. So having liquids even touch the top of my shredded gums was was so f'ing painful that not eating was the lesser of 2 evils. I'd wake up from sleep drooling blood all over myself and I must have drank my body's weight in blood that pooled in my mouth. After a couple days, I started to get black eyes from the blood that pooled in my face. It looked like I got the #### beat out of me. I was given a bottle of T3s for pain, but that was gone in a couple days. If you smoke weed, it will be your friend. It was then that I really learned the benefits of pain relief from marijuana.
OP I feel bad for you. Having all 4 taken out was a nightmare for me and I am not kidding when I say it was the most painful experience of my life. I cringe just thinking about it. Hopefully yours goes better then mine did.

I've had two out, did them one at a time, it wasn't bad and mine were "as bad as it gets". The benefit of having them done one at a time is your swelling is very minimal, I was eating regular food the next day.
Just be careful with the hydromorphone? hydro-morphine? (I forget what it is called) they give you.. it makes a lot of people sick and puking with any swelling in your jaw is very painful/down right scary depending how much you can open your mouth.
Lots of people don't like the dentist though so they go for all at once, I am a freak who looks forward to going to the dentist.

I was supposed to have 4 out but I woke up and started throwing punches and they had to put me out again. They forgot to take one out.
I was extremely high when I got home and ordered Pizza Hut. Don't do that.

Sounds like you & I had similar experiences. They had to break my jaw too. I couldn't open my mouth all the way for almost a year. It was absolutely brutal. I remember eating Kraft Dinner a couple of weeks after and it was the most delicious thing I'd ever had because it was the first solids I'd eaten since the procedure. Experiences like that are rare though, my brother had all four of his pulled at the dentist with no problems at all.

Had all four taken out last year. Was expecting the worst but only had to deal with a lot of bleeding right after the procedure and some. Next 2-3 days were not an issue for me. Definitely depends on person to person I guess.
Also, when you start eating solids make sure you take your time and not jump the gun with that.

I had all four out at once when I was 21. I was asleep for the surgery, and that helped. It really wasn't that bad.
Good luck.

got all 4 removed just a few years back (at 30).
my lessons learned:
1) I'm a wimp, so i went under for the procedure. I dont think i could stomach things had i been awake.
2) Do NOT rush recovery. I woke up a day or so after, and felt just fine, so decided to go for a run. my recovery period was easily extended by a week or more due to my stupidity. I should have just stuck to enjoying the T3s
3) Get a syringe and rinse the holes. Mine got infected, and i had to go back and get cloves put in to calm down the inflamations which was painful.

Yeah, and of course everyone is different. The general consensus that I got is that having 2 teeth out is significantly less painful then all 4. My sister had 2 out and she was fine. Went to school the next day and was eating solid foods pretty much right away. My 4 came out and I was wishing for my death.

I only had the two upper ones, and got them removed this summer. Pretty much the worst ordeal I've been through, and the only time in my life I've needed pain killers. Luckily the World Cup was on, because I was out of commission for four days.

I did the same thing a lot of years ago.
Time of recovery = depends on the person, took me about 4 days
Swelling = can't remember, probably 3 days
Pain = didn't have any because of:
and some

Thanks for the advice from everyone. I had it done this morning. 5 wisdom teeth pulled from 3 corners of my mouth. So far not too much pain and swelling. Well see how it goes, I'm definitely staying on top of my pain killers.
