I'm about a 6/10. I moved into a house that had 3 cats living in it. We gave the house a good cleaning including steam-cleaning carpets and floors, got rid of the curtains, replaced the furnace filter and had the ducts cleaned. I never had any problem at all.
For me - it's all about the soft surfaces. Rugs, curtains, beds, furniture, (Even the people's coats and laundry!) Heck, even cat-people wearing fuzzy sweaters can make me wheeze and sneeze. I thought for sure lingering eau-de-chat in the house would be an issue for me, but it never was.
If you think about it, Once the people have moved out and taken their cats and their fabrics with them, the big bulk of the dander is removed. Unless the cats have been permeating the floors and walls with cat-pee, removing the soft surfaces and cleaning the rest might just do the trick for you.
I got by with steam cleaning and keeping the carpets. If your allergies are severe, maybe you'd want to look at replacing the rugs/underlay if the house of your dreams previously contained cat?
