As has been mentioned, there is probably a variety of reasons why the numbers are higher there, like the repression of sexual and gay culture. Because really, there are the same percentage of gay people everywhere on the globe, so the number of people looking at porn or gay porn should be about the same. I think a similar study also showed that the south has a higher viewer rate of all porn in general. So yeah, sexual/cultural repression is probably a big factor.
But to take a stab at why this is a problem and why it's upsetting I have the following.
What the problem is, is that a lot of these leaders, and churches, and communities openly condemn peoples lifestyles and promote hate speech based on their beliefs, and then engage in such behavior themselves. They deny people the rights they deserve for political gain or moral superiority, and then do it behind their backs.
It's a deplorable way to act, and one of the biggest problems with dogmatic thinking. As PIMking said, religious zealots and those who blindly follow them often sit safely behind 'do as I say, don't do as I do.'
Course that's a situation as old as time. Those in power simply don't practice what they preach, and it's even a bigger problem when you add religion to the mix. And we aren't going to get rid of it any time soon.
However, when your able to shine a spotlight to a specific issue with religious hypocrisy, such as gay rights, sometimes you can get enough information out there to cause a shift.
