1. and some sort of fund set up in case of a major drop in the price of oil and gas.

2. (Except Edmonton, of course, which should be paved over)

1 - Like the Heritage Fund? Or the new stability fund they've created? :P But I agree that the money should be put away for the future (but I really, really want the money too - perhaps a bit of a compromise).

2 - I agree as well

Sort of. There are a lot of things I could think of that I would classify as money well spent, and sending out dividend cheques isn't one of them.

Off the top of my head: I would rather pool it and introduce free education, with the requirement that anyone who took part in the program spent a minimum of 2-3 yrs working in Alberta. Not the best idea, but better than throwing money around at nothing. At least that way it would be going towards something that would benefit Alberta or Canada in the long run, instead of sending out money to people that have 3 addresses and 4 names, who just moved out from Ontario to collect a free paycheque.

Considering we are debt free and oil prices are ridiculously high, I would say the next surplus announcement will be staggering. There should be enough cash for increases in all of the areas which have suffered cuts during the lean years.

I would gladly accept a citizens dividend thank-you. And I like the idea of issuing the cheques to tax payers only.

Surpluses are probably better spent any other way, but it is the people's money and it should go to the people, as much fun as massive faclifts to McMahon, Burns, Foothills, Clarke, Telus and Commonwealth would be...

I think the refund should definitely go to taxpayers, but I think they should also give the refunds to post-secondary students as well, call it a reward for being there and more help for the increasing financial burden.

Time to resurrect some of the Rhinocerous Party's election platform for Calgary in the last Municipal election:

LRT extension to Mexico
Glass dome over Fish Creek for year round use

Reminds me of the Simpson's episode when they find oil under the school...

...Chocolate microscopes?...*STAMP*

Not buying a new car while under 21 and going to university would help too.

I don't understand why refunds and rebates are always the first thing to come out of Ralph's Team. (Other than the obvious)
It's an election year so the obvious reason is the only reason.

I'm not in financial difficulties by any means, but, like everyone else, a cheque (refund, dividend, whatever you want to call it) helps out when you're not able to work full time. No denying it.

The surplus is a result of high energy revenues, not so much high provincial taxes.

Personally I would like most of the money put into the Heritage fund. This way when it balloons to a large amount, we can use the income from the fund to improve infrastructure, heatlh care, and education.

The rest can be used to get rid of the Health Care Permiums. The premiums are a regressive tax and that is not good for the economy

How about paying off the national debt on a credit card

using red dye number 5 on our coastal waters so we look like an atlas map from space

Putting West Edmonton mall on wheels and taking it to poor third world nations so they can shop at the gap

Go to Vegas and put a billion dollars on "Red"

Open a chain of Leftoriums in West Ed....

A friend emailed this response when I mentioned the survey. Different response.

"This is the biggest collection of rhetorical, loaded, ridiculous government ######-ups.... Talk about downloading responsibility... these bas**rds can't even determine for themselves what needs to be done. They just blunder along and lean heavily on 'Well. That's what you told us to do." It's the lamest 'leadership' I have ever seen. "

Well. given some choices I've recently made I could definately use the money for the next 2 years. But long-term I'd like to see the Heritage Fund built up.

Selfish answer: Give me my money!
Intellgient answer: Put it in the Heritage Fund.

Would everyone like a cheque like that? The impulsive part of me would like a cheque for $1000, but the responsible part of me says it's kinda stupid, nevermind the pre-election issues.....
Uh? I don't understand your statement. It's our money so we should have the right to spend it the way we want to. The money should be given back to the taxpayers. The PCs are already spending way too much of our money on the abyss called health care, etc. No need to waste any more of our money.

If they don't give the money back, then my 2nd choice would be to help pay of the debts of the cities.

Spending too much money on the 'abyss called healthcare'?

I wonder whether you complain about long waiting lists, inadequate care...

Frankly, the healthcare system needs more money...not less.
