The dual 480's served me very well for years and I'm hoping to be able to have the same long term performance for the next cards I buy.
Well with 4GB of VRAM I'm not sure how future proof these cards will be. There's already a game out there that requires 6GB of VRAM for max texture settings, Shadow of Mordor. Even if it's due to lazy optimization, you might see more games like that down the road. That's why I opted for the 970 instead of the 980, it's a great upgrade for right now and will be more than enough to tide me over until the 8GB cards come out and become more affordable. My plan is to wait for the 10xx series due out in 2016 and do my future proof upgrade then, selling the 970 for a reasonable amount

Dang.....

Shadow of Mordor is a game I'm playing right now. The cards I have now can run it but I'm sure I'm missing out on some eye candy. Same can be said for World of Tanks I think but not to the same degree.

I'd like to play SC as well. Everything in my rig is new, except the vid cards.

I guess the best thing to do would be to follow your model and just buy one for now and sell when the new ones come out.

I'm assuming a single 970 is going to provide a noticeable boost over my current dual 480's?

Versus the GTX 590, which is comparable to dual 480s, the GTX 970 ranges from significantly to massively faster:
