Lech Walesa was a greatly loved politician who made a huge difference in Poland and Europe in the early 90's.

Jon Gnarr is the winner because he refuses to work with any politicians who haven't seen the Wire. As it should be.

Roy Romanow,
Was the first premier in Canada to care about balancing the budget and reducing and eliminating debt. Was the premier that really turned around saskatchewan. He also moved the NDP in the province to the right, shut down tommy douglas's hospitals in a lot of small towns to make the system more efficient. He went against the ideology of his base to do what was necessary to keep the province from bankruptcy. He raised sales tax to 9% in the short term but over his term reduced taxes overall.
Later on he did that crown report on the state of health care and again reviewed what was actually happening as opposed to just backing his previous parties ideology. A lot of Ralph's deficiet cutting strategies were lifted right out of Romanow's play book.
Funny that one was NDP and one was conservative but the both came to the same conclusion of what needed to be done at that time and did it.

What about Elizabeth Warren down in the states? I haven't completely kept up on her, but she seems to be doing a pretty good job with her Senate seat.

There are many good politicians who work hard for their constituents. The bad apples make news with their pratfalls while the others continue to do the right things for their constituents, with honesty and integrity. Don't let the bad ones ruin all of the others for you. It's a hard job.

Peter Lougheed is still on the board? He'd be a strong candidate

I guess after getting use to living in that condition, I can see him wanting to live in a small house rather than the state palace.
Interesting fellow and it's nice to see a S. American country on the right track.

I was going to mention Elizabeth Warren. I love so much of what she supports and stands for.

I might prefer her over Hillary as president.

I think she would be less of a contentious choice, the GOP may be slightly more willing to work with her than with Hillary. I don't know that she could garner enough support to win an election, however. I would certainly vote for her if she ran.

Had an idea!

I'd imagine there are a lot of politicians in small towns or cities all over the world that do a great job. Its just the ones on a big stage that act like idiots for the most part.

I don't think it will happen. I don't object to Ron Paul as a person (don't know anything about him). I object to libertarianism, however, because it is (IMO) a deeply flawed political theory.
Of corse, there is also the problem that libertarianism seems to attract a lot of xenophobic, racist, mysogynist extremists under its umbrella.
