How do we know he is not going to be a star?
Glencross gave no indications at all that he would be more than a 4th liner when he got traded to Edmonton as a 25 year old. He was a 1.2M 3 year UFA the next year.
The DEL is packed with NHL players who would have played in the NHL and would rather play there than the AHL. Richie Regehr spent basically his entire career in the DEL..... The AVERAGE salary there is $250,000 K.
Richie Regehr was a year older than Giordano and they were very even on who would end up in the NHL. On Dec 26 Richie R. had a serious concussion and that finished his year and let Gio get 48 NHL games in.
The next year Gio was off to the KHL and Regehr was off to the DEL. I have to believe that the quality of life in Germany in the DEL was far superior to life in Russia. Read Jamie McLennan's book on his experience in the KHL
Regehr had a great season in Germany and Gio a ho-hum season in the KHL. Gio came back on a one way NHL deal and Regehr stayed
I think that Wolf either makes it to the NHL this year or is back to Germany the next.
