I voted Housley, as the best player at the position. He can't be blamed for the MacInnis trade, but he did what was expected of him in Calgary.
As a very close second choice, I think Sarich was a much stronger defensive defenseman that Nattress.

The MacInnis for Housley trade was clearly a low point in Flames history ... I was so sad that day, but I never blamed Housley for it.

In a way if the team was going to suck, (which it did) at least with he and Fleury the team had some talent to watch on the ice and weren't just a bunch of off the glass stiffs.

I went with Housley here. His time here was weird to me. He came in at the very start of the 'dark era'. To me, he was always more Gary Suter then Chopper.

Even though he's not getting a ton of love here, it is interesting to see that his carreer totals were not that off from Chopper's. I think 9 out of 10 people would take Big Al in his prime over Phil, but Phil's carreer was absolutely nothing to sneeze at. He came into the league full time at age 18. In fact from 82-83 - 92-93 he never played less than 72 games. In that era he is 3rd all time for point by a Dman (Big Al right behind him, but at a higher PPG): http://www.hockey-reference.com/play...rder_by=points

I think Phil also gets overshadowed for playing all of his prime in smaller markets (Buffalo and Winnipeg).

I'd like to vote for Nattress, but he was a liability on the ice far too often. His best defensive move was the sliding poke check from behind, but that was something he had to resort to because he was beaten so often by the opposing player. I'm glad he won the Cup, but man did he ever scare me when he took the ice.

Housely is by far the best player on the list, but I never warmed to him as a Flame.

Went with Houston. Tough dude with some skill... played great in the '81 playoffs... and had a great nickname.

The thing about "The Thrill" was that it wasn't a term of affection. The guy put up tons of points for a losing cause, because he couldn't play without the puck, wasn't clutch, and played "defense" in name only.

He never went anywhere in the playoffs because he wasn't any use when it mattered. With Washington he was a healthy scratch in the finals.

One of those talented guys who you'll never win with.

I went with Nattress.

Housley is likely the most remembered #6 for fans, but I was not particularly a fan of him or his pee wee sized stick. No doubt about the strength of Housley's game was his skating and offensive prowess. Defensive speaking he was frustrating for me to watch.
