God I love this company. So damn progressive. No BS red tape and fat cat backscratching, unlike so many others out there. I hope Calgary becomes a city fully invested in the electric car industry, including all necessary infrastructure, when Tesla's presence makes it way north.
This is what I was talking about in the last Tesla thread about how Canada, and specifically Alberta, should be making a move to try and get this type of industry here. We should be embracing it or it will eventually crush us. This isn't just about electric cars for Musk, he's looking to have the world operate this way and it will directly affect Canada's and AB's economy. We should be trying to get him to come here and base operations here. It would also be yet another middle finger to oil and gas for Musk.
He is part Canadian.

I think it would be a great move for an industry completely etched in oil gas to start diversifying into other growing industries. Non-renewable resource industries won't be sustainable long-term; this would be a great opportunity for Calgary to show it's not just an oil and gas leader; it is an energy leader. I couldn't think of a better opportunity, to be honest.
Tesla's Canadian office here in Calgary? Yes please.

Are you guys talking about adding industrial jobs or commercial jobs?
Both. Commerical would be the manufactoring of the cars/batteries and stations, and the retail side.
Industrial would include research/manufactoring into potential large-output, clean electrical energy. Although Musk seems partial to solar, which isn't the best fit for Calgary, but that doesnt mean that research and testing can't happen here.
It could even serve as a location for Musk's development of the electric jet and there's even another local forward thinking company and potential partner in WestJet, to try and impliment it.
And a little bit more forward thinking. Why not get Canada involved in SpaceX? Canada has been at the forfront of technological advances in space before. Again, lots of land around to set up shop for a joint space initiative.
Having anything to do with car manufacturing in Alberta would instantly be squashed by Ottawa and re-assigned to Ontario. Guaranteed.
It's not manufacturing, it would be corporate. Manufacturing would still be done in the States. Plus, Tesla can determine where they want their Canadian corporate headquarters, not Ottawa. Alberta has the lowest business tax rates in the country. Many business move here because the favourable economic conditions.

What kind of corporate? Like engineering design teams?

Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk declared the Silver State the winner Thursday of a high-stakes battle with California and three other states for the $5 billion "gigafactory" he says they need — and need fast — to mass produce cheaper batteries for its next line of more-affordable electric cars.
While I think there are some great designs and ideas, there is better fuel sources out there. Also, the composites, etc to make the battery and the finite material available for the conductivity and the sheer energy to make the batteries is not cost effective. Let alone this:

Batteries aren't a fuel source, they store energy. Which fuel source is better?
Not sure how you can say it's not cost effective, electricity is far cheaper than gas. A Tesla is somewhat more expensive than a similar Audi or MB but not that much more, and over the life of the car you'll save a huge amount on gas.
Cars that get split in half by poles at highway speeds are going to have problems, battery or gas or hydrogen or whatever, I'd rather be in a Tesla compared to any other car out there for safety.
