Dont do it. We dont want to improve in any way this year. Spend just enough to get to the cap floor to ice a team to finish last to get Mcdavid.

So that gives you an idea of what the Leafs value Franson at.
And Gorges was traded for a 2016 2nd rounder.

I would say Engelland would be similar in value (slightly less) to Gorges. Both are gritty good character players getting paid too much for too long.

Gorges has to be worth more than Engelland on the trade market. Probably much more

Gorges is a far better player than Engelland. Not comparables.

He would be great in Calgary, but I am afraid of making any deals with Toronto, we never win. Even minor deals like Modin. Just one of those curses I think.

Edit: my bad, as AC pointed out, Modin was not from TO.

Colborne?

Also Modin came from Atlanta.

Well, if there is a deal between CGY and TOR for Franson, I support it. If it's Wideman @ 50% retained salary, so be it.

Meh, I'm indifferent when it comes to Franson. I'd be happy if we could get him for Wideman straight across, but I don't see why the Leafs would do that deal. Anything else seems like an overpayment.

I would not trade Smid for Franson.

Despite the rumours, I think the Leafs have no interest in moving Gardiner.

Perhaps, but you wouldn't think a playoff contender would dump a player for a draft pick if he was that much better. I suppose they needed the money for Subban. I think Engelland could surprise with the added responsibility.

And Engelland can fill in a bottom line forward role when the need arises. I think that may come handy if one or two of McGratton/Bollig/Bouma get hurt.

Pretty decent utility signing who doesn't put up with the guff who can spot in and give our young players room to breathe. Brings the $ amount more perspective IMO.

Well, it's not like they dumped Gorges to pick up Engelland.

Each team made their respective moves independently...don't think it's fair to judge value like that, when the teams are in completely different situations, particular cap-wise.

Do people realize that Wideman is 31 and has 3 years left on his contract? Franson is only 4 and some months years younger and will be a UFA after this season. Franson is hardly an upgrade, especially offensively. A straight swap is great, but to retain 50% of Wideman's salary? Just to get Franson or to get rid of Wideman? Retaining $2.65M this season isn't a problem but it'll seem like Franson's cap hit will be $6M+. Just seams a silly way to acquire a player the caliber of Franson.

Losers who want to lose deserve nothing else. Frankly, if we finish dead last, I hope Edmonton wins the draft lottery. People like you deserve that.

Or maybe it's the whole, "This is a competitive sport and wanting to lose should never be acceptable" type of attitude that most athletes have. If we can't win a cup without McDavid, we have worse problems. Other teams seem to have done fine without having Crosby.

Anyone that can honestly stomach wishing their team to lose for a small chance at getting a good player sounds like someone who has never played any sports, much less hockey. That's not a requirement for knowing about the game, but it is for understanding the competitiveness of athletes and the people that run these teams.

If you want to be no good, there's a team for that.

People need to calm down. It's not like anyone here is hoping our playoff bound team is going to tank. They're hoping a really bad team will be just a little more bad.

Relax people.
