i just bought a 2014 ford f150 supercrew fx4. Couldn't be happier. It's my first truck, and I love it. It's the 3.5 ecoboost engine. If you want a good guy to talk to at a ford dealership I can give you a name. He deals in mostly used vehicle sales too.

I own a both so I can weigh in as someone who actually has driven both and not just a fanboy. My Ram has Had zero issues and I get considerably better mileage then the 2012 Eco boost when towing. In town the Eco boost is around 15.5L per 100 the ram 16.5L. Towing the ram is 18L the Eco is 23L.

I don't think you can go wrong with either truck to be honest, my opinion comes from having both and to be honest I like the ram a bit more but that's because the interior is much nicer then the ford but the space the ford has in the crew cab is much better for long trips with several people.

I cannot comment on the GMC as when I was buying the 2013 models had an interior from the 90's and the ride was like a 3500. I have heard the 14's made major leaps forward but since you are looking used you mig like the ford or ram better due to updated materials and fit and finish. Please don't take this as a cut against GM, I owned a Sierra for 3 years and quite enjoyed it but pre 2014 I don't think they offer the same creature comforts.

Really? I can barely tell the difference between that and the previous model.

Put them side by side. Interior is vastly different. Exterior is less of a pronounced difference, but still very noticeable.

Spoiler for large pics
Spoiler!

I find the 2014s look more modern and aggressive.

Yeah I can see it now I guess, but that side by side view is almost mandatory. Love the integrated bumper step...what a simple but great innovation.

I would go with a GMC but I'm also a huge fan of GMC trucks. I've had 5 of them now and have literally had nothing wrong with any of them beside the usual maintenance. Owned a Ford for 1 year and would never go back to that disaster that they call a truck.

You have to admit that the ecoboost, hands down, tows the best of any half ton on the market. No? In my experience the low end torque is night and day compared to any of the small v8 engines including the Ford 5.0. Maybe the poor mileage is due to the fun of accelerating like you don't have a trailer hooked up!

27' is pushing it depending on the trailer, but Ford and Gm's V8's are rated to tow (even with the new standards) between 8-11k lbs depending on the setup.

Back to the OP. In addition to the 2011+ for Ford if going the used route, also consider a 2 year lease on a new one; reason I mention that is that Ford has a smoking deal on those at the XLT/XTR trim (only those trims it seems). You have a new truck for super cheap for a couple years (as that version itself is inexpensive right now, and the lease residuals seem to be different than the others/very good), and figure out if you want to buy it out then. If not, you're not a lot out of pocket, relatively speaking.

If you're going to tow that much weight with a 1/2 ton, I'd suggest you make sure your life insurance is paid up.....

I had the Ram and hated it, but it's possible I had a lemon. Had problems with the module for the 4x4 that they said they fixed, but after bringing it in 3 times for the same issue, I went to a different vehicle for the city. It also had assorted other electrical issues that made me think Dodge has a bit of work to do to get their poop together.

For towing, I bought a used 2006 2500 chev hd and it's been great! It's pretty thirsty (it's the big block 8100, so likes gas....), but tows great, is very comfortable, and has plenty of room for me, my wife, 2 kids and our Labrador.

I have a 2013 f150 ecoboost fx4. Tow a 22 ft trailer that is pretty tall. I get 12L/100km city, 20L/100km towing. That's towing at 110km/hr. Trailer about 6500lbs. I wouldn't go bigger. I find climbing the truck is fine, descending down a long 8% grade with corners and you feel the trailer pushing the truck, and these times I wish I had a 3/4 ton. I love the roomy cab, and how the truck drives. Hate the ford sync, and in hind site should have just went with the xtl/xtr package and saved a bunch of money.

I'm surprised you don't like sync. I love it in my truck. I do everything with voice commands and it's flawless. Way better than the infotainment setup in my brand new VW.

That first appeared in a GM truck in 2002 in the Avalanche. Had a couple of those (OEM tent attachment FTW - with the midgate down, could start up the truck if cold and warm yourself up) and they were ahead of their time in some regards...the internal midgate allowing 8ft+ long loads, side locking, draining cargo storage boxes which Ram adopted a couple years back and cladding which was to prevent scratches of paint if travelling throw low level brush. Also had the rare 8100 for a couple years.

Cladding turned people off and after 2004 they offered both until the 2007 redesign when it was dropped entirely.

The biggest thing for the GM's in 2014 is the interior. Dead quiet (almost too quiet), and upgraded dash, and soft touch materials. Would've liked if they would've given as much room in the rear as the F150 and my mind would be made up. Who knows if the aluminum f150 will carry that same size rear cabin but they should.

With GM's troubles a few years back, these trucks got pushed back at least 2 years later for the redesign than they would've gotten and IMO didn't quite go far enough on the exterior (or at least GMC should've went a little more aggressive and bold with styling, and left the Silverado conservative, as it has turned out). I am guessing the next redesign won't be 7 years...3 or 4 at most to keep up for CAFE regulations...though the return of the all new smaller pickups this fall should be good sellers as well as they may good enough for many people in the cargo hauling dept.

The domestics manufacturers need to steal an idea from the Honda Ridgeline. The 'trunk' the Ridgeline has in the cargo bed is an awesome feature.

They can't because they have frames and the spare fits between the frame. They can do more with the unibody car-like ridgeline.

Hate my Ram, would get rid of it if I could, but it's not worth it to get rid of it. We are now dealing with rust issues and have been dealing with engine problems from the start (stupid K&N filters)....just don't

I have a 2008 Ram 2500 and have had basically no problems with it other than a water pump that needed to be replaced and was under warranty.

It has about 100,000 km on it so maybe all the problems that others are having are coming up for me but for me it has been great.

I have a 2013 F150 Lariat HD.

I can vouch for the F150 ecoboost mileage that was reported earlier in the thread. I routinely get about 15-16L/100km city driving and right around 24L/100km towing a 26ft trailer.

While the "tow ratings" are really high on half tons, you are almost always limited by the payload capacity of your truck. the rating might say it is north of 10,000 pounds, but unless your trailer floats behind you the real limit will be a lot closer to 6-7000 pounds. due to the rating of your rear axle. Generally speaking as you move up in trim level, you move down in payload.

I am sold on Ford Trucks, Out of the three F150's I have owned I have never had any issues with any of them.
