Considering the two-way deal I would wager that this was the best (only?) offer.

He's their 8th Defenseman at best.

I think this is good for both the Blues and Butlersoft.

Gives the Blues some depth and a shot blocker during the long stretch. Also gives Butler some sheltered minutes and an opportunity to round out his game.

I could see Blues fans asking why the Flames gave up on him.

And then the real Butler stands up.

Butler says he's going to come to training camp and fight for a roster spot. Was going to put his house up for sale Monday. Now keeping it.

The tweet before that puts the comments a little more into perspective:

Spoke with Butler...he says it was tough to accept a two-way deal, but he has no intention of playing in the American Hockey League. (1/2)

Sounds like if Butler doesn't make the team, he will take his ball and go home.

He basically secured a tryout for the team that he wants to play for. The 2-way part of the contract will probably not matter as he would likely get picked off waivers by someone if the Blues try to send him down. It just cover the Blues in case he doesn't.

Sounds more like he's going to work his tail off to make sure he stays in the NHL.

Butler's salary is $650,000 with #stlblues, $400,000 in AHL.

i wonder if it will be any different then how he played for the Flames

would be funny if he didn't make the team, and we picked him up off waivers.

A two way protects a player from waviers doesn't it?

I was thinking the same thing and maybe he is too (not selling his house).

No.

A 2-way contract only means that if Butler is sent to the AHL, he will make a salary lesser then he would in the NHL. I think it was said his AHL would be $400,000 and his NHL $650,000.

Waiver exempt status is based on player's age at his first contract signing, how many games he's played in the NHL or how many seasons he's played in the NHL since he has signed his first NHL contract. It is not based on a 1 or 2 way contract.

Here's a bit of a breakdown on how it works:

For skaters, “games” means games dressed.

For goalies, “games” means games played (i.e. games in which the goalie actually played in the game).

“NHL Games” includes regular season and playoff games.

A player’s age is defined as the age he will be on his birthday in that calendar year. For example, if a player signs his first contract in May, and in June he turns 19, he is considered to be 19 “when he signed.”

Well this makes the contract Feaster gave him look ridiculous. Good signing for the Blues though. Butler is very well suited to being a 7th defenceman.

If he makes the Blues lineup he'll be fine in a reduced role.

Wish him the best.

Not much difference between his NHL and AHL contract but this protects the Blues cap hit if he's sent down as a one way would still count against the cap.
