It doesn't matter how many playoff rounds were won, the Flames were picking in the late teens/early 20s, what was really expected, that they would select a no-risk player.

Granted I do think that Sutter when he was the GM placed too much emphasis on the player = big, big = good type mentality.

On top of that, they were some pretty meh draft years.

2004, between picks 15-30, only 3 players have 100 NHL goals or more (Mike Green, Zajac, and I included Wolski at 99)... half them have

2005, between picks 15-30, only 1 player has 100+ NHL goals (Cogliano)

2006, between 15-30 blah blah, has 3 players 100+ but all picked before Irving...

2008, save yourself some grief and don't look who went next.

Overall those 3 years looked pretty meh overall. There is probably 1 player in the next few picks after but overall..... pretty weak draft, in years we were picking in the bottom cause we were having (reg season) success. Not overly shocking that we don't have a stock of great picks form thsoe 3 years.

The real improvement is our late round drafting.

Somebody posted that wotherspoon and Granlund are already our best 2nd round draft picks in the last 10 years

Well they definitely aren't. Brodie is, or maybe Gaudreau. Not to mention they were second round picks

I actually think Sutter drafted decently given the amount of picks and where they were in the round. He's actually found us some pretty good players.
