Mixed feelings... it was really fun watching him play for the Geneve-Servettes, and he helped a lot to make Geneva a competitive team last year (led the Swiss league for awhile).
Super happy for him though, good luck back in NA Lombo!

I always thought he would do well in the East, hope things work out for him.

Could be a good deal for the Rangers if he's still an elite penalty killer. For sure I thought he was done like Savard and Pronger.

Remember when we used to call him the Handless Horseman?
Good times, good times.
(Still one of my faves though. Welcome back Lombo! Lots of wetness amongst the female population in NYC today, I'm sure.)

i've always liked Lombo despite the fact that his hands weren't as quick as his legs =)
Always admired his blazingly fast skating speed. Good luck to you Lombo!

Seems the Rangers came calling on him, he wasn't expecting to be back in the league again.

The New York Rangers announced the signing of Matt Lombardi to a two-year, $1.6-million contract on Wednesday, and while the 32-year-old forward was planning on remaining with Geneve-Servette HC in Switzerland, he said he simply could not resist "an amazing opportunity" to return to the NHL.
Here's what Lombardi said, via BlueshirtsUnited:The plan was to go back - I had signed an extension there, and my family was really happy there - and even though I had the out in my contract I didn't think anything was going to happen [in the NHL] so I wasn't thinking about that too much.
With New York, it just kind of fell into my lap and I just felt like it was an opportunity I couldn't let go ... I felt like it was a once in a lifetime chance, especially at my age, and it was a pretty cool opportunity to play for this team with all of the success they have had. I just thought it was good for me.

Though he was the handless horseman, he always has been one of my favourite players of all time... and my wifi key. Glad to see him back on NA ice.

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Matthew Lombardi will be put on unconditional waivers by the Rangers. He refused to go in the AHL. He'll probably go back in Switzerland.

Poor Lombo, I was hoping he had found an NHL home yet again.

If the Flames claim him they have to send one of Monahan or Gaudreau to the AHL until another player on the roster clears waivers which would be Sunday noon ET at the earliest.
Why would you want him anyways? He couldn't crack the Rangers lineup even with Stepan hurt and the Flames really don't have a hole in center that you could argue that Lombardi is better than.

You can temporarily exceed the roster limit to acquire players via waivers for as long as it takes to have another player go through waivers. Basically if you claim Player A off waivers you then designate Player B as a non-roster player for the purposes of putting him on waivers.
Not that it really matters in this case since the Flames (or anyone else) likely won't claim Lombardi, but if someone more enticing comes up on the waiver wire, the Flames wouldn't need to demote a non-waiver eligible player just to claim the waived player.

Yeah, Hartford or Geneva? Tough call.

Frustrating for him. Why sign him for 2 years and then put him on waivers? Was he bad in preseason?
