I was told I had torn cartilage once... Turned out I actually broke three ribs. very painful time, especially since I had a lung infection and was coughing non stop

I've broken ribs on several occasions, it sucks just as bad every time, impossible to "get used" to that pain.
My body doesn't handle prescription pain killers well, they make me extremely sick, which, when taking pain killers for broken ribs, the last side effect you want is vomiting, so over time, I've found what works best for me.
Aleve was the go to pain killer, alternated ice and heat, 15 minutes of each, ice, then heat, every 4-6 hours, Hot showers when my chest felt like it was getting tight, started out as 4 or 5 a day, just felt like it kept my lungs clear, and open, reduced coughing significantly.
Sleeping in a recliner as many have noted, certainly helps, I spent 3 weeks in one last time, and along the same lines as the hot showers, I had a humidifier next to me while I slept.

Best of luck, hope things get better sooner than later for you.
