@SportsnetTicker: NYI sign Grabovski. Including his #Leafs buyout, he'll make more than Jonathan Toews

Toews: $6.5 mil

Grabovski: $5mil + $1.8mil buyout = $6.8mil

Good moves by the islanders. I think they need another top 4 D and they will be in the mix in the east.

The east seems pretty wide open right now

i actually like grabovski. i think teams that have a good 1st line but need a second line threat, he can fill that role. He also does play his heart out, he was the leafs best forward plenty of nights while he was here.

I think it could be a good fit.

Kulemin is such a oddity for me. so unclear what he really brings to the table, doesn't score, doesn't really use his size, etc. Boy got paid that's for sure.

My understanding is that Dal Colle would more than likely not play in the NHL this year. He is tall, but really needs to add some size on him. I think most are expecting him to be returned, and to remain as Cassel's winger.

It's pretty amazing how colossally bad Yashin turned out for the Islanders. Not only did they give him that ridiculous contract, they also traded Zdeno Chara and the 2nd overall, which turned out to be Spezza, for him (as well as Bill Muckalt, but that's neither here nor there).

Which will actually help our drafting position a fair. If the points are more spread out in the East, and the fact that the West is so damn strong, there's a pretty good chance that we get absolutely buried in the standings. The only team in the East that I see bottoming out really hard is Ottawa. In the West - Arizona and Calgary are in tough.

With these signings, the Flames now have the most cap space in the NHL per capgeek.

$19,163,333

I would also say the Flames have the best shot at 1st overall right now as well in the draft. Not that we should cheer for that kind of thing... but...

not that we are cheering for it, but we are going to struggle to make the playoffs.

We will be introducing young players to the roster and there will be growing pains. I just want to see our compete level as high as it was last year. I am prepared to accept growing pains, but as a fan I am not prepared to accept losing (as was done in Edmonton).

Queue the Flames fans being angry that ticket prices went up when the Owners are saving all this money.

The Islanders badly need to finish as high as possible this season to avoid egg on their face with Buffalo getting their first round pick. If they were to finish bottom 5 again it would be a disaster for them.

It's like he just woke up from a coma and missed the last 5 years of free agency contracts.

Two awful signings in terms of dollar amount and term but it does improve their team for next season. Most of the bottom ranked teams have improved fairly significantly over the past couple days.

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Treliving and Burke have build a rock bottom last place team that should (depending on what the new lottery rules are like) ensure that the Flames get either McDavid or Eichel. Sabres are obviously still in the hunt but the other teams in the bottom 6 are definitely a lot better now than they were before the free agency signings.

A mediocre team gets more mediocre.
In the weak East, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Isles heavily in the mix. They have ridiculous forward depth now and a healthy Tavares. Combine that with a massive upgrade in net (their goalies had a combined .898 save%) and they should get a big boost in the standings.

Good for the Isles which is good for the Flames draft position.

Good thing Garth Snow can't hear Roenick with the Yashin and DiPietro buyouts plugged in his ears.

Roenick made $8 million in 03/04 and put up 47 points. He probably shouldn't talk too much.

What? I thought the Engelland signing put us in cap jail.
