I really think the most important thing I'm reading is "Term important. 3 years or less on all contracts." It's refreshing to hear that, we'll see how long it lasts. The biggest issue in the NHL is longer term contracts for middling players, something that occurs significantly less frequently in other sports. Of course, this is also a league where GMs think they should sign players for 13 years, so there you go.

Atleast they kept all their signings 3 years and under compared to the rest of the league where 4-5 year contracts are being handed out like candy (Pouliot, Orpik, Bolland).

So the current roster looks like

Glencross-Backlund-Hudler
Raymond-Stajan-Jones
Gaudreau/Baertschi-Monahan-Colborne
Bouma-Knight-Mcagratten
Extras- Bollig, Reinhart, Wolf, Granlund
Bennett also possible

Giordano-Brodie
Russell-Wideman
Smid-Engellend
Wortherspoon

Hiller
Ramo

That roster is in McDavid territory. I suspect the flames make a couple deals before oct 1 or that is an ugly roster

Yeah same here, I think they paid way too much, but at least they recognized they did and gave a reason...... some how makes me feel a little better.

Fan960 now cutting out online, again. Between that and the Flames website unable to stream the availability, pretty poor showing electronic media wise.

Overall, I'd say exactly what needed to happen today:

Broadly, kept roster spot potential for young players, addressed cap floor situation (leaving enough flexibility if we need to trade Wideman too), kept terms short for stop-gap players as to not hamstring us in a few years, added veteran leadership on a young, rebuilding team, filled holes in roster from outgoing players.

Hiller - great signing. Provides some competition for Ramo, which is important.

Raymond - also a great signing. Fills a hole in offense, adds to team speed and contract is short. He seems like he reeeeally wants to be a flame. That might motivate him to step up to a new level on this short contract if he wants to stick around longer.

Engelland - fills a need for 5/6 right-handed defense. Adds size, toughness, and it seems most importantly good locker room leadership. Yeah, a bit of money, but it is not that relevant as the term is fairly short and we have oodles of cap space. The only reason to be concerned with an overpayment is that it can hamstring a team for the future. This doesn't, so it's not a problem.

We need signings like these to keep us from going full-Oiler and build properly for the future.

Solid B+/A- for the day.

They are still interested in bringing him back. They have made an offer and are still talking to his agent. It's still possible that something gets done.

The reason they didn't give him a QO was because he could have gone to arbitration and they felt his case would have been strong for a reward they may not have wanted to take on.

Treliving also confirms that they have moved on from Butler and Westgarth and the rest of the former Flames who went to UFA.

Glencross - Stajan - Hudler
Gaudreau - Monahan - Colborne
Raymond - Backlund - Jones/Granlund
Bouma/Bollig - Reinhart - McGrattan
Wolf

Giordano - Brodie
Russel - Smid
Wideman - Engelland
Wotherspoon

Ramo
Hiller

My guess as to the rough roster come september. Thinking we might deal Wideman before then, though.

I think I am satisfied with today.

We lost Cammalleri to New Jersey but at least they tried but couldn't compete with the term. I am sure Flames are offerring short-term maximum 3 years but Cammy looking for a longer term. Good luck on Cammy.

They filled out the position for a backup/1A-B goaltender in Jonas Hiller. 2 years is pretty good and he is still a decent goaltender who can play at any given night. That would spell overplaying Kari Ramo in his 2nd season as the Flames goaltender.

Mason Raymond I think will also help as a replacement for Cammy. He is not as good offensively as Cammy but the guy can play on both sides, penalty killing and have speed. I know we could have signed him cheaper last season but that's how it goes.

Derek Engelland is a bit overpayment but I guess with anticipation of losing Butler, they need to sign a defenseman. Derek is big, tough defenseman who can also play as forward. I just hope he is not like Shane O'Brien who is also big and can be tough but didn't really uses his size to his advantage. Is he going to replace Butler's willingness to block shot? I guess we'll find out. If he plays tough every night, i guess i can go past the blocking shot part.

I am not sure if they'll sign some more UFA today but i am sure they'll still make some minor signing to fill out the AHL team.

Could the Engellend signing be similar to when good call Bobby Boughner was signed during the dark ages? I thought they overpaid at the time but he became an important leader and fan favourite.

I won't lie between the draft and now I figured the flames would have made a fairly substantial trade.

Losing Cammy replacing him with Raymond, and replacing Butler with Engellend does not really improve the team in my opinion. Adding Hiller was a very solid move and contract.

Where the flames are at today I am definitely Italy thinking they take a step back. I also feel Bennett will have more than a small chance to make the team if the forward group is not upgraded. Sven, Johnny, Reinhart, and Granlund also will get a real look.

The team will be in the mix to add another high end prospect next summer and hopefully take a step towards competing because right now they still are built to suck
