Some - but if they are trading 3 of them they will be gutting their pipeline to get Spezza.
Interesting decision given how many strong contenders the West already has. Even with Spezza are the Stars better than:
Kings -nope
Hawks - nope
Blues - maybe on par at best Oilers - nope
Ducks - nope
So they take a huge swing when they are in a group of half a dozen that are all strong contenders. Not sure that is smart.
I agree. This doesn't push Dallas enough to be a contender. I guess they are just trying to get better to hopefully make the playoffs.

One of these things is not like the other...

Yikes. On first glance, that's brutal and definitely a win for the Stars. There's not even a first round pick in that return and if the players are going to be "meh", you'd hope you can at least get a top 30 selection in the next draft. With Spezza's contract situation, he's likely to re-up with the Stars quickly.
Murray was definitely handcuffed on the deal though.

So what are you saying - the west is tough so Dallas should just stop trying?
They are trying to make their team better. I fail to see how that is not smart.

I rarely take extremes, but man, what a terrible deal for the Stars. While Spezza will likely never play a full season with major back issues, you have to get a 1st rounder for the guy to give hope to the fanbase. They got virtually nothing for the face of their franchise and that really sucks. Melnyk is a cheap bum.

It is all about timing and understanding when to take your best swing
But my comments were made prior to seeing what the deal was - seeing what they had to give up - it is a strong move. They were able to secure an elite player without giving up an elite prospect or 1st.
So no question - it is a GOOD deal.
I would not have favored them gutting their prospect base to get Spezza given the strength of the west. But that's not what they had to do.
If Dallas wants to be one of the powers in the west then they have to load up like this. They've done some nice work through the trade market recently.
A team that just pushed Anaheim to the brink (blew up in game 6 with a minute left) just substantially improved the second line and power play. They still need a d man or 3 but man those forwards are incredible.

I agree with the bold, but they do have Seguin and Benn entering their prime - trying to put it together now seem like an appropriate thing to do to me.
Whether a particular deal qualifies as appropriate or not, is of course a different issue.
And I also agree, for what they paid, this was a great deal for them (and I am not a Spezza fan)
