He's still good for 40-50 points a year, I don't watch him enough to know how he is in his own end.

No precedence as to how severe the penalty would be.
They're going to feel real stupid if they lose their 2015 first round pick.

The league will probably just give it back.

he's still a lot more than depth

he's a top pairing PMD and can still run a power play

recapture numbers here:

So the recapture penalty would have been $10m (if he retired in the next 3 years, or less if later)

How much will the buyout cost them?

Maybe they plan on outbidding everyone for Niskanen? Moulson back? Hiller? Tim Murray isn't an idiot and I'm sure they will reach the cap floor. It's possible he wasn't a good locker room fit and they wanted to move on rather than tolerate it. I don't have an issue with the move if this is the case as they can pretty well outbid the entire league for anyone they want in free agency. It's just a matter of convincing players to come there but some of these UFA's will be just about the money so that likely won't be a big deal.

If there's any justice, the Sabres finish last and lose the draft lottery next year. I'm really starting to get a dislike of this organization.

I really hope they lose their first round pick if they try to tank this hard. This is no way to do business.

Yup and that's part of the problem. I doubt any team that thinks they might be under the floor will lose their 1st round selection. Then the money penalty probably means nothing to a guy like Pegula. Better off paying fine than keeping Ehroff or signing a long term deal with big money to a ufa that can never live up to contract. What was the other penalty? I think office personnel get suspended. Lol do they really need a GM in place for the entire year to tank for McDavid? A 2-4 week holiday to Hawaii in the middle of the season is just what the doctor ordered in able to keep mind fresh for the draft.

After the buyout, the Sabres are $20.6m short of the floor, counting 14 contracts.

Assuming at least 2 kids are going to play (Grigorenko, Zadorov, Reinhart - take your pick), that would mean that they would need to spend about $19m on the remaining 7 contracts.

And of course, with each additional kid, those numbers get worse.

Over/under on how many games the Sabres win next season - 10? They aren't even trying to hide their tanking. And in a few years when all of these top draft picks start developing people are going to point to this team as a model for how to rebuild. Disgusting.

i don't understand.

Erhoff is still a decent/good player. Was there really no team willing to trade for him?

I can't see how they do this without having something in place first. There's too much salary to add via fa. Just sucks as they're likely taking a couple trades off of the flames plates.
