The Future Considerations draft guide makes it sound like he's got a lot of holes in his game but if he can keep it simple he could pan out as a competent defensive defender.

I like the pick, but even the goalie we drafted shoots left! The Flames are going to be like the old Soviet teams where players only shoot left I guess.

Good 6th round value here:

ISS "“Raw d-man who possesses strong shutdown qualities and a physically imposing frame. Plays with intensity”.

A large defensive minded defenseman. Ollas Mattsson plays a fairly simple and smart game, using his great reach to his advantage. Is a consistent player that will be mostly recognized for his solid defensive play in the future. Can work some on his mobility. (EP 2014)
THN had him at 98th overall. He still went way later than their ranking.

Don't know much about him, or anything really but like big players that know how to use their reach to their advantage.

Another big man. So far Flames drafted a good two-way centre Sam Bennett, a big goaltender Mason MacDonald, a big RW Hunter Smith, a couple of big defensemen Brandon Hickey and now this huge Adam Ollas Matsson. They even added a gritty winger Brandon Bollig via trade. I'd say they are covering what they needed in the near future. Pretty happy so far especially if all these guys play in the NHL sometime in the near future.

More from ISS:

ISS Scout O.Lahdesmaki: “Really good defensively, physical and tough to beat. Skating a bit heavy, clumsy but effective”.
NHL Potential: Stay-at-home NHL upside with simple puck moving ability.

RLR had 56th:

Excerpt:

Source of debate among RLR staff. Some see him as a solid 2nd rounder, while others feel he makes too many giveaways in own zone under pressure.
Projection: Huge and steady #4-5 puck mover.
Style compares to: Henrik Tallinder

This is where you pick a player who has slid in the draft, not in the first two, or high third round..

great pick

Have never seen him play, but his size and descriptions remind me of Nicklas Grossman.

RLR Profile

#56

Very big and strong defender is a physical beast who takes care of his own end first. Powerful down low along the boards, winning battles and clearing the zone efficiently - fends off checkers and moves puck to the right spots. Very defensively aware with his head on a swivel around the crease. Uses long wingspan and mobility effectively on the PK to clog lanes and disrupt offensive flow. Communicates with his d-partner - take charge guy who directs teammates. Makes great reads to come off his man and block dangerous shots. Moves men off the puck and keeps crease clear. Shows good touch on short area passes, even off the backhand. Makes crisp, long lead passes with vision. We’ve seen him spot an opening and step up down the slot to bury a quick snap-shot, but generally lacks an instinctive feel at offensive end. Source of debate among RLR staff. Some see him as a solid 2nd rounder, while others feel he makes too many giveaways in own zone under pressure.

Projection: Huge and steady #4-5 puck mover
Style compares to: Henrik Tallinder

What's with all the lefties. I've always thought being right handed was more common.

I actually am a fan of this one. Hope he comes to the chl.
