You know this for sure?

Doughty is the best defenceman in the NHL.
He wasn't the best defensemen in the NHL in this last regular season. It's not a lifetime achievement award, it doesn't take into account the playoffs, it doesn't take into account the Olympics.

Gio isn't even in the top three vote getters. Name even ONE aspect of the game where Doughty was better than Gio in the regular season? Gio had far better offensive numbers, and better defensive numbers.

Offensive is easy to look up.
Defensively, let's put it this way: When Gio was on the ice, the Flames were +12. When he wasn't on the ice, the team was -44.

When Doughty was on the ice, the Kings were +17, when he wasn't on the ice, the Kings were +20. Giordano, like Doughty, played regularly against the hardest competition in the league.

Honestly, the only player that is reasonably in the conversation with Gio as the best defenseman in the NHL this year is Keith. And Keith maybe only has an edge because of his team's success.

If Suter was the only guy who left and the only guy added to the Wild that might show something but considering there are a lot of other factors involved it doesn't really show much when comparing Suter and Weber.

The Preds were obviously better with two top defenseman but Suter hardly carried that team and as good as he is isn't better than Weber.

Oh he is without a doubt better. I know that Weber's the Canadian boy with the big shot but Suter is simply a better all around defenseman.

Suter has less points in more games basically playing the same teams over their careers, not sure how he is better offensively. He certainly isn 't more physical so better all round defenseman seems like a stretch.

Perhaps you want to argue he is better defensively, I would say you are wrong but at least an argument could be made here.

Given a choice between the two I would agree with Nashville that Weber is the easy choice to go with .

+/- is such an overrated stat. The defence man that is probaly hardest to play against right now is Shea Weber

I think it goes:

1) Shea Weber
2) Drew Doughty
3) Duncan Keith

For the voting this year, I think it goes to Keith. The trophy tends to go to the one that puts up points rather than the whole picture. It should be Weber, but I voted for who will get it, which is Keith.

We already know Doughty is not in the top three vote getters. Unless you meant Chara?

I meant the best defenseman in the NHL... I rank those three as the top 3.

Exactly. If it was possible I would have put in a 4th - Ryan Suter

I just love how those were top three defenders on Team Canada. Such a deep blue line for us this last Olympics... one of the best international d-cores ever.
