Treliving wasn't asked the question. But I agree, not sure why it was asked to Burke.

Burke's the president of hockey operations, why wouldn't you ask him about hockey personnel questions? It's kind of his job.to know what the team is up too.

Treliving is the GM, roster moves and questions should be directed to him. Burke himself said in interviews that Treliving is the person to talk and he (Burke) would be in the background. That's what I'm basing my thought on.

Burke and Treliving can't do much to control which questions are asked during interviews. If this came up, and if Burke knows something about it, then why wouldn't he answer the question?
Just because Burke is stepping back a little from the public eye does not mean that he is enveloping himself in a cloak of complete silence. He's a recognisable figure, and will still be doing interviews from time to time, and these things are bound to come up.

Geez...can you imagine the explosion if Burke answered (like a troll) with "I'm not going to comment on that"

I would not do it even if Toronto offers generous amounts of prospects and picks....

He is lying! History would indicate the Flames and Leafs talked about Phaneuf plenty...

I thought Burke was going to be in the background after we got a new GM?

Burke was speaking at a fund raiser in Toronto. It was a Toronto reporter talking to him. Treliving remains in Calgary working. Pretty simple really. No big deal.

I think people should appreciate that Burke is willing to open up and answer questions... he could be someone like Darryl Sutter who gives blunt and short answers.

Proper response should have been, "I am unaware of any discussions between the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs on the availability of Dion Phaneuf. Questions of this variety should be directed to Brad Treliving as this falls under his assigned duties." Pretty straight forward answer and establishes the fact that Treliving is in the guy in charge.

I wish the people who come into these types of threads and say "he should just his mouth" would just shut their mouths. The NHL is entertainment, and the media is always clamoring to provide current, relevant tidbits. He was asked the question, and he had the answer.
I am not even a Burke fan, but give it a rest already. Why do people try to stymie information like this?

Burke is 100% involved in hockey operations. He'll be commenting on hockey operations at times. Get over it and get used to the management system the Flames have in place.

not sure folks understand the mangement structure in place going forward.
It's going to be that "management is meddling in hockey decisions" bickering all over again, yet this structure is receptive to that type of involvement. Burke is involved, and i see no issues on who's answering what questions.

Not only is that suggested response remarkably un-Burke-ish - he's the president of hockey operations, so if there were trade discussions between Toronto and Calgary he would've at the very least heard about it. He didn't, so he said no.
Burke has stated previously that Brad made the calls and he gave the advice, that should be good enough for you. He doesn't need to reaffirm that Brad's the trigger guy every single chance he gets.

Yeah, it's frustrating to hear people complain about Burke being involved.
He will ALWAYS be involved. He is the boss of hockey operations, and Treliving's mentor. It's part of the new management structure. This is how it is now. It's how it will be in Vancouver with Linden and Benning, Toronto with Shanny and Nonis, and so on and so on.

For the first few year I actually think he should. People shouldn't think that they can just do an end run around Treliving and go to Burke directly. His stock answer should be "You should to ask Brad about that".
