Try FanXchange, it is the same idea as stubhub but prices always seem to be a little bit lower on it.

Ya I know. while it is great to get sold out concerts etc. I still believe that they get first crack at seats before they go on sale to post on their sites immediately a after the public sale. how can concerts sell out AND get posted to stub hub within seconds of them going on sale. something just seems fishy

Yeah there's absolutely sellers getting tickets before they are available to the public and tossing them on StubHub at inflated cost, no doubt about it.
Just going by the local market, don't Avison Young Club members get early access to most/all Saddledome events? Not an unreasonable to jump conclude the brokers use similar accounts in all major markets and essentially purchase early tickets to every event.

Try NHL Ticket Exchange for Flames tickets much below Ticket Master costs.

Yes. A/Y seat holders can purchase tickets to events in their seats 2-3 days prior to any public sale or pre-sale.
Also, Flames alumni, ambassadors, staff, players, management/executives and some of the larger sponsors of the Flames are given the opportunity to purchase tickets prior to them going on public sale or pre-sale. It's a pretty extensive "in house" list that the ticket offer is distributed to.

Agreed, StubHub is a great way to buy tickets at market demand. I managed to buy a single ticket, 10 rows above Brodeur for the Stanley Cup final in LA for 2012.
It wasn't more than $200 over face, and to be that close and be a part of that game will always be a fond memory I will treasure, which wouldn't have happened without StubHub.
Also, when I don't feel up to a game I have a lot of success selling the tickets this way.

I don't even bother trying to get tickets to concerts or sporting events from Ticketmaster anymore. I plan to buy on Stubhub. As a buyer, I like being able to choose exactly the seat I want. The days of trying to get tickets by refreshing the page from the minute they go on sale is over. I also don't miss entering illegible words in order to see available seats.
As a seller, I've gotten paid quickly and it couldn't be more user friendly.

Ticketmaster should license stub hubs system. You make a good point, it's just so much easier to use. I never have any success with Ticketmaster unless it's 54-40 at Deerfoot Inn and Casino.

The major ticket brokers in the States have an incredible business BTW. I was bewildered when the tickets I purchased on Stubhub for a Flames-Oilers game in Edmonton came from Florida once.

Every time I stuff my Kansas City Chiefs tickets into a UPS envelope, I wonder if the people on the other end notice that they are coming from Canada.

I've found that Stubhub can be cheaper for non high demand events (especially baseball games)
The key is finding the sweet spot between season ticket holder price and face value (plus fees and taxes) price.
That way the seller makes a bit of $ on his tickets, and the buyer pays less than he would have from Ticketmaster.

When is the best time to buy? We're going to San Diego and I'd like to check out a Padres game. Do prices drop as the game gets closer for some of these mid-week games? Or should you buy early? Or even just hit up a scalper at the door?

The closer to the game the better, people will usually setup the tickets to decrease in value as the game gets closer. Especially for a Padres game, they don't come close to selling out, so no big rush

You can pick exactly what seat you want, get terrific deals (I've always been at or below face value), and as mentioned by Kootenayguy9 the customer service is solid.
I just don't know how Ticketmaster stays in business. It feels like StubHub is world's largest best kept secret.
As for when to buy....tickets definitely get cheaper towards the event time, and you can always find a few seats right in the section you want. Waiting is a good strategy. That said, I bought Yankee and Red Sox tickets months in advance and still paid below face.
tldr; buy now and get a good deal. Buy closer to the event and get a great deal. Either way you win.
Edit: I've only ever bought sporting event tickets - just assuming the same experience applies to concerts.

Well, considering almost every ticket sold on Stubhub has already paid TM for their fees; I'd say that's how. The two services are not in direct competition; Stubhub resells tickets- whereas TM is the first seller.
