I don't understand his role on the team, unlike McGrattan.
So, no.

I said no because I would rather see his spot given to a younger player.
With that said, I wouldn't be upset if he is re-signed since he seems to play his role well.

No. He can't play.... and even then, he's not really a great fighter.

Westgarth kind of grew on me for some weird reason. I don't think he will be back, because I think he's hoping to get a contract out East......I won't be surprised if the Flames go out and sign a similar player though. A big, gritty 13th forward with NHL experience.

This is precisely why I want to see him back. Obviously he is not the most talented player ever to don the jersey.
But he understands what his role is and what he has to do to stay in the league. That makes him a good role model for the kids and a useful example for the coach.

I think a player like Westgarth is good to have, provided they can play the game as well. I would prefer to see that role taken over by a younger player full-time. To see a guy like Ferland or someone come in a take over this role while adding skill to the team would be a better option if possible.

All the nay-sayers, have you not been listening to Burke? He wants 2 tough guys on the team, who else besides McGratton plays that role. Give him a 1 year deal, see hoe it goes. Lets Wolf play in the minors.

This.
He's not much of a player and when he fights he tends to lose. Why would we want him on the team again?

He makes the 4th worst team in the NHL feel chummy.

We need the two tough guys because the rest of the team is small, tiny, wee.

by that token, every player on the roster should be thrown out (throwing the team's record/results in like that).
the 4th line was generally a decent line, for their limited role, on most nights. Pretty sure the flames record was better, much better, after the westgarth acquisition. The guy got tuned pretty good in a few fights, but there he was dropping the gloves again when he was back in the lineup.
That fact alone makes him > jackman. I tend to agree that the flames need some bruisers to police the ice given that the size of the team is likely going to be on the smaller side again this year.

That doesn't mean it has to be Westgarth.

It boggles my mind that people can't spell his name properly.
Anyways, continue with the Westgarth discussion please.

The Flames' 4th line played 4 minutes a night and got dummied every game.
McGrattan fills our "tough guy" quota just fine. Bad hockey player, but at least he's a good fighter.
Players like Bouma are who you want on the 4th line. Burke talks about being a 4 line team, it starts with icing players who can actually play hockey. Bouma isn't afraid to fight every now and then, but he's actually good at the sport.

Good guy, but not necessary. We can have BVB or Wolf play the odd game where we want a second big body to pair with McGrattan.

love bouma but the guy isn't a fighter, nor is he as physical intimidating as westgarth. with the flames not having much size on the wings again this season, bouma likely playing 3rd line mins to add some hitting to the top 9. But he is NOT a fighter. He's had 2 fights in the last 2 years at the NHL level (compared to 13 by westgarth).
What games are you talking about where they got "dummied"? i thought for the most part the 4th line was rarely hemmed in their own zone or a major liability on the ice, regardless of their icetime.

McGrattan and Westgarth both actually averaged around 7 minutes a game, not sure where you're getting 4 minutes from.

Westgarth looked better than I thought he would. Makes guys like Wolf, Brabant and whomever else is fighting for those 4th line minutes at least a stepping stone. If they do, he can be the 13th forward, or be sent down to the Heat. Don't see it as any sort of an issue re-signing him.
By the sounds of it, I think Burke will want to utilize 2 guys that are in the heavyweight class at least as an option against certain teams. It is tough to argue with the product on the ice after that acquisition last year, of which I was not a fan of to begin with. Team did pretty well.

Pretty much this. Just sign the guy to a 1 year, 1m contract, it's not like any of us want him to a long term deal. He can be the 13/14th man, he doesn't even have to be playing unless someone gets injured or not earning their spot. When Jones was down last year, Brian got 3rd line minutes and Kevin got the 4th line RW spot. I saw no problem with it.
