didn't Boston throw a parade for Bourque when he won one in Colorado? That was lame.

Personally I thought Kaillie Humphries should have gotten the nod over Shatner let alone those two.

So it used to be Klondike Days, then it was... what? I know it did change, but I forget what it was. And now it's K-Days, which is basically Klondike again.
Unless the article just used the previous name.

Just looked up the wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Days
1879 - 1964 "Edmonton Exhibition"
1965 - 2005 "Klondike Days"
2006 - 2011 "Capital Ex"
2012+ "K - Days"
It was renamed to K - Days as per public vote when it became apparent that "Klondike" and "Capital" were words too challenging for the average Edmontonian to pronounce

Which also seems to be why they changed 'Exhibiton' to 'Ex' there previously as well!

Should of been Maher instead of Shatner. What has Shatner ever done for the City of Calgary? Maher is a Calgary Legend. It was a bad choice in my opinion

So what should I know about Stampede? I have went to Stampede once in 2006 but I have never lived here. Any tips I should take? Any Stampede party advice?

Really depends on what you want to do. Drink, party and possibly contribute to the city's April baby boom, family events, community events...?

You're a Landman aren't you? Stampede breakfast with drinks, early lunch with drinks, vendor party, concert. Repeat x6.

Sutter is a successful Albertan, and successful in a thing many Albertans care about. That's what Sutter being parade marshal would be about, not latching on to someone else's cup.

Anyone with parade tips? I am considering taking the toddler to the parade this year but we obviously can't sit overnight or anything ridiculous. I can easily park at my office in the Beltline and walk to 9th avenue - is there a better spot to sit? Should we take chairs?

As Res says, it really depends on what you want to do. There are a lot of things to do. One of the best parts of the Stampede is that it isn't just a fair and rodeo. A lot of cities and towns have those. It's that the whole city gets behind it, and it's a busy crazy ten days in a lot of areas.
If you have kids I would suggest doing a kids day, they'll want to go to the Stampede Park for sure, and then get a sitter (if needed) and do an adult day with the wife. Because there's lots you can do with both.
If your single, there is no better time of year to get loaded and meet someone with loose morals and no gag reflex. In all seriousness though, there are lots of great parties public and private to check out, great concerts and themed events and not all are cowboy themed. Strangely enough, there are often a lot of great electronic acts that seem to pass through here at this time if you get sick of all the boots and hats. Whatever your taste in music though, you can find many concerts. Large arena ones, local and indie, electronic and dj, rock, metal, and of course country.
Make sure you take in a Stampede breakfast and lunch. Breakfasts range from big to small, often from your local bank to the giant one at Chinook center every year. And if your walking around downtown you can often find a bbq lunch that is often free or cheap, say a donation to a charity for a few bucks.
If you have the time, just spend one of the sunny days walking around downtown and Princes' Island. Take in the sun, the crowds, and just explore and see what you can find. It's a great time to familiarize yourself with the city too, find new places you like whether it's food, booze, shopping, or local attractions.
The one thing I like to tell Stampede newbies is often the best parts of Stampede aren't even in the park.
Lastly, Stampede Park. Hey, it's overpriced for sure. But it's a pretty good fair, and if you wanna catch a rodeo event (dunno how easy tickets are to get this late, might be tough) that's the place to be! There's Nashville North to listen to country music and get your drink on, the exhibition hall to check out 'exhibits' (see: mostly crappy consumer goods), there's the fairgrounds with the crazy fried foods and rides and games. There's the Coke Stage with a nightly concert and other acts.
And if your a poker player come swing by the poker room in Cowboys Casino and say hi! Great time of year to play some texas hold em.

Quoted to ask additional questions... I also have a toddler, and I think she'd love to see the parade. How long is it (time wise)? Any recommendations for how to see it without getting there so early, that she has lost all interest by the time it starts? Is it a faux pas to let her sit on my shoulders, or is that like wearing a top hat in a theater?

While the parade starts at 9 am, if you're on 9th St, you won't see it for close to an hour, depending on where you sit as it runs up 6th first. I'll be honest, the best way to score a decent seat and not have to sit for hours with your kid is to send someone early with seats. We do this every parade - I go down early, around 5:30, with a group of friends, and we set up seats for our family and then they come down around 8 with the kids. the kids can play and draw on the street with sidewalk chalk for a while and then go to the seats when they start coming. It's worked well over the years, but as I know, toddlers can be unpredictable and you might want to plan out an escape route if they get owly. Our daughter is 2 1/2, in the past year's we've brought her stroller and she's either sat in it or our lap, but this year, we're taking a little camp chair for her.
