The context was that a white man was forced into kissing a black woman to humiliate him. I'm sure the racists could get into that reasoning.

The LA Law kiss was pretty natural because there was build up to it over several episodes. They bailed out of the storyline pretty quickly afterwards which was disappointing. The DS9 kiss was thrown in and both actresses looked like they felt awkward doing it.
