Last time we went (probably in the 90's), there was a woman running out of the restaurant carrying her kid, with her hand over her kid's mouth, and with vomit spewing out the sides. I'm guessing it wasn't because of the food but not really the sight you want to see walking into a restaurant.

judging by what people are saying about the quality/aftermath of the food, I'm wondering if maybe the roaches were really escaped menu items.

Yeah, we went there before Flames games too. It was a real hotspot!!
It was a different location -- I think it was in the same area but it was a smaller place a block or so off Macleod Trail (like a block south of Denny Andrews) in a weird little office complex/strip-mallish thing with a tiny parking lot.
Calgary in the 80's... your basic Chinese restaurant, but you needed reservations, and the dumplings seemed exotic. And cashews in the chicken dish? That was wild stuff.
Edit: I think this accountant's at 47th and 1st Street was the location of the Home Food Inn in the 80's and 90's.

Every single time I've driven by that place I wonder, "Who the hell would eat there?"

Oh crap,
I met some colleagues there (their choice) 2 weeks ago on the last day that they were open. We all LOVED the food and ranted and raved to our waitress who told us they were closing the restaurant and moving locations. A few hours later, we all felt disgusting from the meal. Now I feel worse after reading that.

Yep that was the old location. We were regulars there in the 80s. It was actually pretty good. None of this buffet style garbage they have now a days.

I'm surprised anyone thought a restaurant called Home Food Inn wouldn't have cockroaches.

Wasn't Foody Goody the place that got shut down for serving horse meat? I forget how that went down.

I thought it was common knowledge in Calgary that eating at the home food in, is like eating off the floor of the Biosafety Level 4 lab at the CDC headquarters.
I had one trip there in 2002 that left me with the ability to crap through the eye of a needle for a solid 3 days. If Fear Factor ever gets rebooted, the million dollar, season finale challenge should be surviving a trip to the Home Food Inn.
