Doesn't say what country the store he purchased the over the counter medication from was in.
Can get some pretty awesome stuff over the counter in Mexico...

Most professional athletes take something. He was just dumb enough to get caught.
NHL is worse than Lance Armstrong era cycling. They hardly test.
It's impossible to play the way they do without oxygen vectors, roids and HGH for recovery and stimulants. I have no problem with that. They need it to do their jobs.
IMO it's no worse then drinking red bull and caffeine pills to cram for exams.

You have clearly not read much about that era of cycling.

The guy's a pending UFA and the suspension doesn't kick in until he's signed? Talk about a career killer. Gotta wonder if there's more to the story than the official NHL/NHLPA story here.

Agreed.
Seems unbelievably harsh for an 'unknown substance in an OTC drug.'

But then Konopka is on the ice after winning a face off which I'm sure the other team wouldn't mind.

Well that sucks. He was one of the few NHLers that was scheduled to play in the Canada vs. USA series in Australia in July. I was looking forward to seeing even 1 NHLer on the team. Maybe he'll still go as it's a NHLPA event (I believe) rather than a NHL event.

Westgarth sucks at fighting. He was a punching bag last year.

Exaggeration which is nothing new to you. I saw him lose one fight and he did okay in the rematch.

“@tsnjamesduthie: NHL sources say Zenon Konopka was suspended for taking DHEA, an over-the-counter supplement recommended to him by non-team doctors.”

I imagine there will still be an NHLPA appeal on this.

I don't think it'll be a career killer. If he signs for a considerably discounted amount a team will still bite.

I would argue that steroids hurt your offensive game.

For many players sure... but a 4th line grinder/face puncher? Why take the discount?

Make a million dollars in the NHL like he was this year or make literally a tenth of that in the AHL like he did a couple years ago. It's pretty easy to see why someone would be tempted to get a leg up on their competition when it means a 10x raise.
