I definitely thought of the hockey sweater short story when I saw this. It seems like ostracizing people who don't support the Habs has been going on forever.
The hockey sweater story, it's one of the best. Never get tired of watching it. There can be parallels to this story, Flames-Oilers, Flames-Canucks, Habs-Bruins, Habs-Sens, Sens-Leafs, and Leafs-Red Wings.
Montreal is a joke. A kid can wear whatever they want.
As a teacher, I wouldn't make a student take off their Oilers/Canucks/Riders/Leafs/Habs jersey, but I will ridicule them in front of the other children.

Shouldn't tell a school girl that she can't wear a different jersey on jersey day.
Absurd. But look through the rule.....amazing how polarizing and important hockey is in Quebec. Maybe its that i have lived in lots of places and now live in the US, but I think the passion behind the dumb rule is kind of cool.

Not really, I was in grade school in the 80's and I never remember even a fight breaking out between the Oilers and Flames fans. We were what I call normal kids, not warped by our parents insecurity and stupidity.
Funny those Calgary kids grew up to be fun loving fans who peacefully partied in a full 2004 run, while those Montreal kids grew up to burn their city down over 1st round losses.
Flames fans should never draw parallels with Habs fans, we are just simply on average way better than those wackos.

You lived in a strange neighbourhood then. There were Flames/Oilers fights in the schoolyard all the time. Had nothing to do with parents...
This is a media generated story. This is an English school (private?) that requires uniforms. You can argue the merit of individuality based on that policy. I personally think uniforms are stupid, but whatever.
So they have a 'special' day where you can wear Canadiens apparel instead. It's not a wear what you want day or wear a jersey day. It's Canadiens day.
If I was a business owner, I would have done the same thing and let staff wear Habs gear. Had someone come to work in Bruins apparel, I would have sent them home too. I don't expect it would have been newsworthy tho...

I don't know - I agree with OldDutch.
I don't remember a single fight breaking out on the schoolgrounds between Flames/Oilers fans, and the 80s covered grades 3-12 for me roughly...
Calgary has traditionally been a more laid-back city than Montreal... or of course Van...
Bah. If elementary kids start fighting over their favorite hockey teams, would be a perfect time to step in and lay down some lessons and priorities.
Ruined a fun day on account of a bully? How about using it to teach respect and that we're all fans and we shouldn't dislike each other for opinions on sports teams but rather on behavior.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. It is a great way to teach kids about respect and that sports are really just a game and for fun. Not hatred between fans. So silly.
So..our way or the highway? lol sounds like quebec. Did they expect all the kids to be habs fans and not prepare for that possibility? So poorly handled and now the girl has to take all the blame for a special day being cancelled for everyone and will probably socially put her in an uncomfortable place just because she wanted to represent another team. What a joke.
LOL, Ontario comes to mind as well.
