Well, I'm damn happy for the kid. It'll be good for him to get out of North America for a while and clear his head with some European air.
He'll be a difference maker wearing his country's colours.

Yeah me too, It seems half the people on CP drank Burkes sour kool-aid and forget this kid has huge talent and could be a big piece of this team going forward.
If he's not a big piece of this team I suspect another.

It's very cool that our top 3 prospects (including Monahan here for convenience sake) are involved in this tournament. Hoping they get lots of icetime...

I don't like all of the hate for Baertschi there was a grand total of 6 players drafted after him that have played more games in the NHL. He just needs more time. This was Backlund's first really good season.
Round Pick Team Name Pos Games
1 15 NY Rangers J.T. Miller L 56
2 37 Columbus Boone Jenner C 72
2 43 Chicago Brandon Saad L 126
2 47 San Jose Matthew Nieto F 66
5 139 Chicago Andrew Shaw C 165
7 208 Tampa Bay Ondrej Palat L 95

I think this is a good sign that his 200 foot game is improving. You don't play on a swiss national team unless they think you can play their system.

Hate? First I've heard of it. Heck I haven't heard anyone yet call him an outright bust let alone hated on him. There has been some disappointment but the consensus is that he just needs more time to prove he can become a regular in the NHL. If the Flames were the Oilers he may have been playing on the 1st line while amongst a NHL worst +/-. Flames are doing things the right way here with him.
This should be a positive for him as he can hopefully get some ice time and gain some confidence. Troy Ward was on 960 this morning and judging by what he was saying I would expect that barring an amazing training camp in September he will be back with the Heat and that's not a bad thing.

He was going to for them last year in the World Championship but was hurt. They finished 2nd so they ended up taking most of the same players to the Olympics.

Agreed. No one is hating on him. He had a disappointing year. Realizing that and articulating that point isn't hating on the guy. I think everyone here wants him to rebound next year and become the player we hope he can be.

We keep saying we'd like an organization like Detroit, yet look how long they keep prospects down on the farm. Let's not rush these kids; we're not the Oilers. We always want our first rounder to be an immediate savior. We fall head-over-heels in love with them and shortly thereafter want to trade them and move on to our latest love....Monahan is the exception to the rule in that he played so well we couldn't justify sending him back to junior. We shouldn't expect this from this year's fourth overall pick.

That's fine. But he was out scored on PPG basis by Granlund, Reinhart, Street, B.Jones, D.Smith and Ferland. It was a disappointing year. There's no way around it.

I'm certainly not disputing this, but his talent is real. I suspect one more year in Glens Falls is in the offing unless he really steps it up in training camp. Even if we play him at the start of the season and later decide to package him, we'll get closer to his true value. I'm sure he feels that he is being punished because he was Feaster's pick and not Burke's. Look at how Yakupov and his agent reacted to his sitting out. It's hard to go from savior to being told you're not ready. I hope we don't do this with Johnny.

There's also no way around recognizing that he had a pretty great stretch to finish off the season.
People should be encouraged by that.

Street, Jones and Smith are all older players with a lot more professional experience. Granlund and Reinhart both had exceptional years. Hell, Reinhart broke the Abbotsford record for points in a single season, and Granlund wasn't far behind. Ferland was too small a sample size.

Best thing for him to cap off the year. I think with the way his play picked up at the end it will be a great experience for him to get some more competitive hockey in before the summer. Tough year to start but looks like he has been turning it around!

You raise a good point here about agents. A good one will keep Sven in a positive state of mind. A bad one will encourage him to feel aggrieved and to look at things short term.
I know nothing about Yakupov and don't know who is agent is...but I can think of a bunch of Russians who have/had terrible representation that messed up their NHL careers, in some cases before they were even drafted. Happes to others as well, but more frequently with Russians imo. They sometimes chose agents who just tell em what they want to hear. Bad idea.

How did Sven become a way to grab quick laughs?
Why don't we start supporting him, instead of taking lame potshots?

Is it more likely that I'm taking potshots at a prospect or mocking the people who actually have given up on him?
